Re: Physical Phenomena Experiments - Science in a box

Thanks Kimmy, third time lucky!!! And if anyone else is having problems getting it through, I used my personal gmail account for the last effort. So if you're not in the NSW DET system, maybe try a personal account - it could be filters in your Dept's system (or other IT black magic) that's stopping ...

Re: Stomach Disection

DId the sheep's intestine a few times many years ago with one of the crazier teachers - other classes came to watch. Arranged the desks round the room, spread lots of newspaper out, heavy duty gloves, cut the intestine away from the mesentery, laid it out and and measured how long it was, then cut i...

Re: 8 Week course

Many years ago, a teacher's husband explained it this way. When he was a kid, he thought holidays were for the kids. When he started dating a teacher, he decided that holidays were necessary for the teachers' health. Then he married a teacher, and realised that holidays were for the spouses of teach...

Little boxes

Anyone out there got any bright ideas about where I could get small boxes for making jack-in-the-boxes? We currently use match boxes, but my supply of empty boxes is about to run out, and since hubby stopped smoking, I haven't been able to find a new supplier. Cheap would be good, free/recycled woul...

Re: sodium metal

Meant to post this weeks ago - why you shouldn't mix sodium, potassium, radioactive waste and seawater! Combine it with the video clips that Japezz listed in this thread and it could lead to a nice little classroom discussion..... or more requests for bigger lumps of Na. (Insert mad scientist smiley...

Research!!! Scanning assorted sources (newspapers, magazines, net) for info related to topics. Finding new or better ways to do pracs, trialling pracs, working out why pracs don't go the way the book says they should. Looking after student teachers, introducing them to the idea of risk assessments a...

Re: lab refurb or oh God cant someone help me

Many, many years ago at the start of my school career, I worked very, very briefly in a school where for reasons of layout I can't remember, access to one lab at times was through the prep room - past stock bottles, wash up area, prep bench areas and my desk, and with the ability to duck down anothe...

Re: RiskAssess software

Been using it for about two terms now - much better than our home grown system I was trying and not succeeding to get the teachers to use previously. Teachers do the RA, and it gets emailed to me. I check it and change any errors eg listing iodine as a solid rather than iodine solution in the "...

Re: sodium metal

The following is part of an article that I send out each year with the sodium. It's titled "Lid blown off Dounreay's lethal secret", and is from New Scientist, 24 June 1995 (p6) if you can get hold of old copies. [I'll see if I can scan it and post it here.] "Early in the morning of T...

Re: Changing flower colours

Finally got some cheap white jonquils and some time to play. Used half strength and full strength Universal, also Phenylphthalein, and sprayed after 4 hours and overnight, using vinegar, sodium bicarb, and household ammonia. Results were blah - nothing happened. Also tried dipping the flowers in ind...
