Re: PbNO3 + KI experiment?

Hi Ian I asked the Science Assist folks this question last year and they have advised me that the use of 0.01M lead nitrate is okay. We use that concentration here and all works well. If you go to the Science Assist website you'll be able to find the answers to your question there is alot of informa...

Thin layer Chromatography

Hello Labbies I'm attempting thin layer chromatography for the first time. I have made a slurry of 1g silica and 4 g plaster of paris and coated some microscope slides. I'm really not having much luck when I put it in the solvent, the synthetic indicator I'm supposed to use travels the entire length...

Re: Thin Layer Chromatography

Hi Guys I have been asked to prepare the TLC plates. Does anyone know if it matters what type of Silica Gel you use. I ordered Silica Gel 60 from SSAPL because it said it was for chromatography. When it arrived it is labelled for flash chromatography. I rang and asked if it can be used for TLC and t...

Re: lolly chromatography

We too make our chromatography ink, mixing red, yellow, green, blue food colouring to make black. We use filter paper, cut a strip from the centre of the circle to hang down into a beaker of water. Put a drop of ink on the centre of the circle, the water travels up the filter paper to the ink and br...

Re: Liquid Nitrogen and Dry Ice

P.S. Bigmack I had a think and about the how much it makes and have decided I over did it and would say30- 40 puks. The snow pack thing you buy is a one off purchase and at around $350.00 is very expensive but worth it.So initial outlay is a lot but after that its not to bad. You can use dry ice for...

Re: Liquid Nitrogen and Dry Ice

Hi Bigmack I purchased ours in April last year and it was $179.88 + GST and $30.99 for the CO2 fill. I think that's like a hire charge for the bottle. There is another place that you can buy the bottle outright and just the $30ish for the fill.Their bottle are more expensive but there no on going ch...

Re: Elodea alternative

In Sydney you get a very similar form , I think its called Hydrilla, the aquarium called it native elodea that works really well if you. Obviously you get it from the aquarium, if you have on close by.

Re: Liquid Nitrogen and Dry Ice

Hi Guys Your other option for dry ice is to purchase a CO2 cylinder ( we have DE size and food grade) and a snowpak gadget that screws on to the top of the cylinder. This allows you to make puks of dry ice that are about 5cm in diameter and 2 cm high,a cylinder makes a lot of puks, I'm gussing about...

Re: embedded specimens

Hi Noona and all chemtalkers,
I have moved schools and left the copy of this booklet, with instructions on how to embed specimens at my last school. Is there any chance of getting another copy from anybody who may still have it.
Cheers

Re: Casual/ relief work

Hi Lada The location sounds perfect. Do you think they would consider making it a job share position? Would you consider doing it as a job share with me? I have just left Queenwood and that was an option that they were considering but I thought if I was studying this dip. ed. full time I wouldn't wa...

Hi
YAYYY I just made the algal balls. Now I'm wondering if others have made them and kept them for use at a later date? If so how did you store them. In a solution, wrapped in glad wrap? Any ideas would be most appreciated.

Re: mini or full MSDS's (sds's)

Hi WE are having our inspection in a couple of weeks and after reading this thread I'm wondering if I should have the bottles of chemicals in powdered form in trays on the shelves they are on. At the moment they are just on the shelves. Solutions are all in trays. Also when you say they checked safe...
