My Last Day Today
Today is officially my last day :cry2: I'm a mixed bag of nervousness - I have to do the "thank you" speech at morning tea in front of all the staff, without blubbering; I am looking forward to going back to working outside and I'm also getting a bit jittery about starting a new job - what...

I'll talk to my hubby, the crime scene copper, for his suggestions. He trains police these days, so has lots of training ideas.

Anyone had trouble with Chemwatch this morning? I'm trying to print off MSDSs but I can't access any.

Re: storage of bromine water
I keep ours in the fridge. Last year after reading someone's post (probably lizzieb's) I bought the ready made Bromine Water after looking at how to make it using bromine liquid. There was no way I was going down that path. The HT (also the chemistry teacher) was really happy with it, better than wh...

Position Vacant - Broughton Anglican College
Here's my job. I'm hoping to find a good home for it! - Merilyn Broughton Anglican College is a non-selective, independent, co-educational day school offering education for students from Preparatory to Year 12. Set on a beautiful 27 hectares at Menangle Park NSW, between Campbelltown and Camden, the...

Re: Are these chemicals appropriate
I just buy bromine water already made up. Making your own from scratch just seemed too difficult and risky for someone with my (lack of) experience. We have had the same bottle for over twelve months, so two prac's worth, and it is still fine. I do store it in the fridge. I would rather buy a fresh ...

Re: Diluting Agar
The nutrient agar is more expensive though and that's why we're always looking at alternatives. Try hunting around on the pricing though, I bought some two years ago and paid over $70 for 100g but bought some from a different supplier last year and it was less than $50 for 100g.

Re: "Sooty" Bunsens
Thanks, guys for your input. I thought that that may have been the problem as no one else has experienced this, but wanted to make sure there wasn't some other problem I was unaware of. I'm in a tricky spot with this one and may just have to put up with black beakers until I find a tactful way of te...

Re: "Sooty" Bunsens
That's what I thought too, but he is in denial. Interestingly their first couple of pracs involved using a yellow flame to show that it doesn't heat water only causes the beaker to go black. They have since moved on to "real" pracs.
But, I'm still trying to keep an open mind

"Sooty" Bunsens
The new teacher has commented that the bunsens are the "sootiest" he's ever encountered. Every time his classes (mostly Year 7) use the bunsens the glassware comes out black and covered in soot. However, the two teachers that have used that lab in the past have never had a problem. The bun...

Re: Plant Cells for microscopy - Yukka
Our biology teacher makes slides of stomata by getting me to paint clear nail polish on the top side and underside of an agapanthus leaf. The students then peel off the nail polish and with it the top layer of cells showing the stomates. By doing the top and bottom, they can compare the number of st...

Re: Rehabilitating Plasticine?
I just buy modelling clay (plasticine) from the stationery supplier. I bought new stuff early last year after the old batch had gone rock hard and was smelling pretty bad. it's still good so I'm guessing I should get a couple of years out of it. A trick for cold weather - put it into the incubator f...

Re: SDS + Chemwatch
curie Firstly, all MSDSs have an issue date on them, they are only valid for five years from that date, after which they need to be replaced. So instead of it being a big job every 5 years, it is something that actually needs to be checked on constantly, although realistically ours only get checked ...

I just stand half the celery in water with a good dose of food colouring (blue or red), the other half is left in uncoloured water. It helps the cut the stems off at the base just before you put them in water. It's best left overnight. If you're short of time you can help it along by putting it in a...

Hey Noona, I've just bought some from SSA, they were $11.50 each. Just noticed that they only have one large air vent at the base. Is this what you have? We haven't used them yet but they seem like they are quite good quality.

Re: pot plant trays
Check with your local wholesale nurseries, the retail ones and garden centres won't be any good. You'd be amazed at the sorts of things wholesale nurseries hold onto for years and eventually throw out. They may charge a small price for things, or they may just be happy to get rid of them. You might ...
