Re: mini SDS
I can give you NSW legislation, but Queensland is pretty much the same. The legislation is very clear on what needs to be in a SDS and there is also a prescribed format. Mini SDSs do not meet that requirement. The SDS must be produced by the manufacturer or supplier. Chemwatch, which puts together m...

Bigmack - you will get used to Riskassess. A great tool as long as all teachers use it. Happy to share some tips. The labelling feature is worth the subscription on its own. Familia with the Labeling , used that a lot at last school , Bluffing my way through the ordering section , but may ask you s...

Re: Welcome back to term 2
Yep, we left home on the 7th May last year. Now but a distant memory.
Sadly, it is also nearly a year since my dad passed away.

Re: Welcome back to term 2
Last term was one of the longest eleven weeks of my life! It seemed to drag on for ever and I was so pleased to have two weeks off. This time last year, I was in the final two weeks before heading off on 14 weeks leave, which ended up being five months but that's another story. Nothing as exciting t...

Re: Chemical Storage
For NSW Schools, look on the Safework NSW website for the Code of Practice for Hazardous Chemicals. This details information that you need on a manifest and what you need on a register. For most of us, we only need a register which requires less information. There's also some handy info on labelling...

Re: Chemical Storage
Five metres? Yeah, good luck with that in most school prep rooms/chem stores!
You're right, you work with what you have. Also good to remember, in the grand scheme of things, we are working with small quantities.

Re: Cleaning of Wicks Used in Alkanols prac
LOL I think I cobbled those Labels on Chemwatch and as I wasn't allowed to use a colour printer , I drew over the GHS symbols with a Red Pen :cheesy: Spirit lamps.jpg The reason I got in thehabit of filtering the spirit back into the saver bottles was due to all the rust and crustys in the burners ...

Re: Chemical Storage
Segregate according the dangerous goods code is the simplest. Although DGC now only apply to transport, there is no issue with using this system for storage as it clearly states what can and can't be stored together eg oxidisers are to be stored a long way from flammables. Happy for you to PM me and...

Re: Cleaning of Wicks Used in Alkanols prac
Yep - just label the spirit lamps and use the same ones for each chemical each time. I empty the lamps into a labelled bottle like Loopy does, but I put just leave the wicks in the lamps and store in the chem store (which is properly ventilated). Great that you have reached out for help. We are all ...

Re: frozen hearts - help!
Soak them in a bucket with nappysan overnight at least, then throw in the machine. What comes out comes out and what doesn't - depends how fussy your school is.

Re: Spring Balances
Watched a teacher, new to us but ten years plus experience, be given the role of Year 10 patron who then went onto try to be "mates" with all his students. Cooking pancakes in the labs on his from home gas stove (I put a stop to that), making hot chocolates for them all. It was driving me ...

Re: frozen hearts - help!
No help to you now, but all the rules about defrosting meat in the fridge is the assumption you are going to eat it. Leaving them on a bench overnight would be fine. Probably doesn't matter if the hearts are still a little firm. Not sure on the pluck. Never had one that was frozen! Great idea using ...

Re: Spring Balances
They've stretched the springs, so just going to throw out and replace. Some were old metal ones and old plastic, how you can't see when the kids are doing the wrong thing, I don't know. I'm seeing more of that in recent times. Kids not being respectful, more inexperienced teachers that don't have g...

I can't help except to ask if you subscribe to Science Assist? Comparatively small fee which gives you access to a lot of resources, including the ability to ask questions and have them answered by experts. Really useful for those tricky problems.

Re: Spring Balances
I've had good intentions and tried to repair. In the end, the broken ones ended up in the bin and I bought new ones. Maybe other people are more patient than me though!
