Agar Plates

Hi All, Please let us know how the experiment works. The soaked filter paper idea is how they test for antibiotic sensitivity in pathology labs. They apply little discs infused with the antibiotic to a plate flooded with the known bacterial solution. Once incubated they look for the cleared zone aro...

Cleaning crucibles

Dear Chsc I posed exactly the same question last year and someone replied that in the scheme of things crucibles are almost considered as disposable items so is it really worth your time and effort to clean them? Not sure this helps but it certainly changed my perspective on this pesky problem. I bo...

Kimmy

What do you make these solutions up in?? Volumetric flasks or measuring cylinders??
If you are doing serial dilutions like this what happens to the accuracy or doesn't it matter??

Starch Solution

Hi I like to mix the starch with enough of the water to make a smooth solution. Stir to get all the lumps out. I then add this to the rest of the water and bring this to the boil stirring constantly either with a stirring rod or a magnetic stirrer. This has always (Touch wood) worked for me. I think...

Red Phosphorus

Hi All,

I have a container of red phosphorus that has absorbed so much moisture that it is now more a paste than a liquid.

Any ideas on how to go about dying it out? Our HOD suggested putting it in an incubator. I'm just a bit cautious about doing this.

Thanks Lorrae :-(

Gum Arabic

Hi Cheltie

Gum Arabic is also used as an additive for paint when doing calligraphy. I know it is expensive but you may be able to buy a small amount from specialised paper/ink suppliers.

Hope this helps
