Re: pressure cooker

I bought mine from Big W. I think it was about $160 but it is larger than the old one and safer to use.
It doesn't have the jiggly thing on top, you just click on the handle and presto!

I hadn't thought of that Lisa.
It's always good to get a second opinion.

Preserving Jars

Does anyone know where to buy really large glass specimen containers?
I have a big female echidna that I have in one of those large square icecream containers soaking in 70% ethanol.
I'll probably need something that holds about 4L.

Thanks for your help.

Re: Tuning fork and measuring cylinders

I don't think plastic measuring cylinders will work, but you could try them out first.
perhaps if you use the tallest gas jars you have you might be able to get a result.

Try soaking in a bucket of very hot water. The oil should float to the top.

Re: Brain disection- help please

I can only get them frozen as well.
I did try soaking them in metho once while they were still partially frozen with no luck. I'm guessing the defrosting process diluted the metho too much to make it effective.

Re: cleaning microscope objectives

If you don't have any lens cleaner (in a pressure pack) you can use ethanol.
Sounds as though it might be iodine so ETOH should remove it, but its really worthwhile buying the lens cleaner.
Styrofoam is also good for removing dust and fingerprints but you need to use a clean piece for each wipe.

Re: Disposal of Potassium Permanganate?

Ian,
I would contact the AIS if I were you. They will know one way or another.
By the way does anyone still do the CSIS training for all school staff?

Don't forget they'll want to see the chemical register too. (i.e.. hazardous chemicals found anywhere in the school, Art, DT, Maintenance Dept). *sigh*

Re: Help - Seeking advice/opinions

I can't really see a problem with school staff tagging their own equipment. If a piece of equipment fails the test but is tagged as compliant then surely the tester would be cutting their own throat if someone is injured (or worse). I certainly wouldn't want that hanging over my head. If it fails, s...

Re: Flowers for Dissection

Any simple flowers that are large enough should do, as anything too small would make it difficult to see the ovules. Look for flowers which have 5 petals and 5 stamens such as azaleas or fuschias.

Good luck

Bok Choy is another alternative you could use, softer than celery making it easier to slice. It comes in a bunch so put one lot in a dilute Eosin solution & the other in dilute Methylene Blue. (I just add maybe a pinch to each beaker of water). Don't forget to slice off the base to facilitate up...

We have those texts you're after and fortunately we don't use them anymore.
No promises though, but I'll see what I can do.

Re: RiskAssess Website

Last week I attended an OHS in Secondary Science Labs course at the AIS. I had only ever been completing risk assessments when we used chemicals outside the CSIS guidelines, and it seems many of the chemtalkers out there do the same. However we were advised a risk assessment must be completed for ev...

Is it plasticine or clay?
If it's clay you can soak it in water until it softens, may take a few days though.

Re: Take Away Food Testing

I was thinking something along the lines of whspa. Perhaps once the water has evaporated from the filter paper the amount of fat could be measured as a visual thing, using a ruler to measure how far the fat has spread. Maybe even weigh the filter paper before & after. I'd be interested to find o...

Re: Bench Tops

Yippee!
I have had the last of my stainless steel benchtops installed during the holidays & a new stainless sink also. The tops scratch easily but the marks can be removed with fine grade steel wool.
Makes the lab somewhat colder but it's worth it.

Judy :)
