Re: First Aid Kits

To my knowledge here in NSW we are not allowed to use anything on the students beyond water and ice. Anything else opens the door to allergies and God knows what litigation. We can wash and we can apply an ice pack and things like sterile gauze pads and slings on injured arms. If in doubt, call the ...

Re: Dishwashers

Hi Rosalie I put 5-6 test tubes together, secured tightly by two rubber bands and then place on one spike. This way you can get more test tubes cleaned and they won't come off the spike. Hope this helps. Alice Sorry Alice Seems I thanked the wrong person for your great idea. :? Karma coming to you. J

Re: Microwave

Hi Sue My microwave came out with the ark, so has no special bells and whistles, but it still serves the purpose nicely. The only thing I would suggest you look for is height. 700-800ml beakers usually fit in ok, but sometimes it is better to use a conical or round flask, with a longer neck, and it'...

What a great idea Nicole! =D> I would never have thought of that. I have heaps of spikes in my dishwasher - I chose it because it had so many - but it's never enough.

This will help me heaps. Thanks!! :D :D

Of course you can take the credit! =D> 8-) It is knowledge gained through your own research. How your research was done is completely irrelevant. :coffee:

Re: Specium jars or what for crystal gardens?????

Crystal gardens are different from growing crystals. You need a clear container of some sort to contain some waterglass solution and add small crystals of various chemicals (you will find lists invarious texts if you look it up. I'm not at work so I don't have it with me). The crystals sit on the bo...

Earth tremor

8O Did anyone on the NSW North coast/tablelands feel an earth tremor around 10.30 - 11.00pm yesterday? We felt it here in Dorrigo, and others say in Bellingen too. Anyone know where I can look on the net to find any record of seismic activity? I would appreciate any information that may be out there...

I'm not sure of the exact instructions for the prac, but loosely explained, the discs are used to inhibit the growth of bacteria on agar plates.

Re: Antibiotic master rings

Yes I've heard of this too, but haven't tried it. We used some old discs (they were here when I started so don't know how old) and they didn't work, so had to buy more. Will try the cheaper option next time.

Hi Ian

You should be able to spend money again after the financial rollover at the end of November, but it will be next year's money. Our school closes the books at the beginning of November so there shouldn't be any outstanding accounts during the rollover. [-o<

Re: pH OF WATER

I just measured the water before and after my new Vertex filter. (So much better, faster and more reliable than the old still that used to practically drain the town's water supply to make a litre of distilled water, not to mention threatening to blow up on the odd occasion). Incoming water pH7 - ou...

Hi all
:?
Surely if there is water present and you heat it hot enough for a long enough period of time your agar is sterilised or the steam sterilises your glassware? I have not had a problem with agar in the microwave. Pressure cookers went out with the ark. :yuck:

Mine works like this:
If it's broken you can't use it until I fix it. If you want it before then, fix it yourself.

Works for me!
