Good idea. We use shot glasses for nail rusting experiments.
Saves lots of time trying to get the rust stains off the test tubes.

Re: GHS labels
Thanks Guys, I am going to start using the new labels but that raises another question. Where we have a chemical that now comes under a GHS hazzard that doesnt have a dangerous goods equivalent where do we store it in the chem store? I printed off a copper chloride solution label from Chemwatch and ...

Re: Insurance travelling while shopping for school
I had a lady here from the union the other day and she told me I was not covered if I went to the shops during school time under the new NSW laws. She said my car is not covered because it is insured for private use not business. She told me to order everything on line and have it delived but she di...

Electrodes
Hi everyone,
We have a lot of old electrodes with no identifying marks on them. Some are obvious - copper- but I am wondering if there is a simple test to do to sort out the rest?
Any ideas would be appreciated.
Thanks
Helen

Glass Making
Does any one know a recipe for glass making?
I have a new teacher who wants to do it and it is not something we have done before.
Needs to be safe for year 10.
Thanks,
Helen

Re: PD day on chemical security
I got an email back from someone in the DEC OH@S directorate who said as far he knows we have five years to change all the labelling and MSDS. He said the deptment would be speaking to chemwatch about the changes. Interestingly he didn't say that the department would be speaking to the lab. techs bu...

Re: PD day on chemical security
Thank you ladies for organising the day for us. It was very interesting. I have just emailed the district OH@S person to see if the DEC has any plans to let us know what we are expected to do by when regarding the GHS. Should be interesting to see what they say as last time I asked they didn't seem ...

Re: SAS SMARTtrain chemical application training
I was sent info about a course called SASS Smartrain Chemical Application Level 2 for Science assistants. It is being run in March at Ryde TAFE and says it is about chemical safety, decanting chemicals, OH&S. There seems to be a different one for GA's so this may be just for Labbies. I have appl...

Re: Lab. Tech. status update
I added up the total number of classes per week then multiplied it by 65 which is the number of minutes in our periods. I then divided this by 60 and that gave me the number of hours of science lessons per week. Does that make sense?

Re: Lab. Tech. status update
It seems that we in NSW have way lower ratios than the ideal.
Maybe that's why we weren't allowed to fill out the original survey about lab conditions.
I got the email from the new NSW lab. tech association- ASET.
I joined up a while ago so I guess they sent them to members.

Lab. Tech. status update
I have just been reading the "Update on the Status of School Science Lab. Techs" that was emailed out this week. I noticed they suggest that there should be 0.6 hours of Lab. tech help for each hour of science lesson. Is this a dream or does anyone actually have that sort of ratio? I just ...

Re: JOB ALLOCATION
I think there needs to be a formula that takes into account not just the number of students at the school but the number doing science. We have 1200 students and lots of them do a couple of science subjects in year 11 and 12 so we have 26 senior classes 9 of which are chemistry. You can imagine the ...

The Oh@S person for our area emailed me to say that the DET is working on updating all the policies and procedures.
They are hoping to have all this information available on line in term 4. She said she will keep me informed.
