Re: Storage of Conc HCl
Old bottle only had about 400 mls left out of 2.5L. We keep ours in acid resistant plastic tubs that can hold 1.5 x the amount of liquids stored in it. Had to fight to get them (inspection year came around at the right time so I got them). My thought was perhaps the heat but its been cool today (we ...

Storage of Conc HCl
Hi All, Had a bit of a fright today. Was about to make up some dilute HCl but when I opened the bottle of concentrated HCl all this gas started erupting from under the lid as soon as I slightly twisted it (as in the lid was still basically on and not screwed all the way off). I fully admit I squeake...

Re: Turn around time for Equipment orders?
Last year I placed an order with serrata for a magnetic needle in late January, I called in March to see where it was and was told it was on backorder. Called again in June and was told it was still on backorder and I hadn't specified if I wanted a north or south magnet ( :cheesy: :cheesy: ). At thi...

I looked at the Consta conference. It looked like it was more for teachers than labbies. Have you been before? Was it relevant?

Re: PDP
I've done a couple in this job and in others, in my opinion its just a way to set yourself up to fail and get into trouble for not completing it. I suggest setting very small goals or goals that you had already planned to achieve, like if you annually clean the bunsen burners or the microscopes, set...

How can that be possible for science to get all they need from officemax? I don't even order anything from officemax! Do they sell chemicals? (private school here)

Re: chlorella
Hi All,
I know this is an old thread but my HOD wants me to keep some chlorella alive that she just bough until the pracs at the end of the term and next term. Any idea on how make the medium, and general care instructions. I poured off 5 ml and put it in some mineral water but I think I killed it

Re: Scalpels
During the Christmas holidays everything gets moved around by the cleaners. I know where my handy blade remover was last year... Can't find it now and I'm pretty peeved about it as I had to beg my HOD to get one.

Re: Phenolphalein
We make it super diluted. Like 0.01 M. Risk assess saids that this concentration is acceptable for students, though we do make them wear gloves and only get it in dropper bottles, so they only have a limited amount. Safety glasses and lab coats are worn for every prac

Same here, except they also tell me to keep the fridge tidy and cleaned out... so for ingredients that I know will expire before the next time we need them I just chuck.

Re: Scalpels
Get a scaple blade remover from westlab and then put in sharps container. The last labbie here tried to reuse them, but the blades would rust on. Now its one time use only and blades are removed directly after use by me.
