Re: Yr 7 Crystallisation Prac

One of my teachers tried to recrystalise sucrose. Because it doesnt get saturated so much as turn to syryp, the class ended up using over 3 kg of sugar, and still didnt get any sugar crystals. I played around a bit and came up with something that sort of works. You have a test tube of the syryp in a...

Re: freezing eyes

A 0.9% saline solution does work, you just need to make sure the eyes are fully immersed.

Re: Brian the Goat!!

We have two kids. A black one that jumps around quite acrobatically and a light one. Some students dubbed the black one Blacky Chan so I called the othe Bruce Wee. Unfortunately Bruce lived up to his name in one of the Labs. But the students had it all cleaned up and disinfected before I even found ...

Re: Bacteria

Thanks for the help. If I didn't work at a Catholic school I would call my copy of "The Laboratory" my bible.
Am also interested in the colony phenotype for specific bacteria such as E. coli and Staph. epi. We want the kids to try and identify them on the plate, then microscopically.

Bacteria

Hi,
I'm trying to find information on identifying bacteria by their colony phenotype but have had no luck. If anyone knows of any good books or websights I'd be very grateful to hear from you.

Re: Records of Ethanol Usage

As far as I am aware you have to keep a record of ethanol use for Customs unless you are using denatured ethanol. If this is incorrect please let me know as that is the system I am currently operating under.

We use playdough, pipe cleaners, pompoms and whatever else we have lying around. It is also a great way to use old cardboard boxes-covered in coloured paper as the base. Once dry, they can then be put up on the wall.

Rock pool animals

Does anyone know a good web site for pictures of rock pool animals? I am trying to make identification cards for the grade 9s to take to the beach. I have been looking, but I seem to have very little results for a lot of exertion. Any help would be appreciated.

Hi, we use nasturtium stems. If you cut them on a 45 degree angle you see the spring shape of the xylem. Water and air bubbles are sometimes visible. We also use the leaves when testing plants for starch and for printing negatives with silver nitrate. We have some groing near the staff car park, it'...

agar blocks

The teachers here want the students to cut their own 1cm and 2cm blocks so I only have to make a large block. Check with your teachers, they may think it a good idea.
