Re: Chem Store Usage
Tell them to bugger off or ring Workcover NSW and they will happily tell them for you for safety reasons. Throw out your chemicals! Are they mad?

Re: Acid/Base stock solutions
For decanting into dropper bottles I run the solution down the dropper itself into the bottle directly from the 1 litre storage bottle (which is kept full from a winchester) This is an old modeling trick for adding metho to very small (10-20ml) paint tins. No washing up and no spills ever. With the ...

We store ours in the little black containers you buy rolls of photographic film in. No problems as a result and they last for years with no discolouration.

Re: Home Brew
Ultra clean bottles and a proper seal at the cap are essential! Don't try to brew anything too "heavy" straight up or they'll explode taking most of your stock with it.

Re: MSDS update
This is the current chemical labelling and MSDS legislation from Workcover NSW. It states: What does the law say about providing labels and MSDS in workplaces? Legal obligations are specified in the Occupational Health and Safety Regulation 2001 (OHS Regulation). Manufacturers are required to classi...

I agree with the above, just rinse, don't force the crystals and leave to soak overnight if your not in a hurry to re-use the glassware.

Most alcohols will distort/ruin the glasses (break down the polymers) and mist the lenses beyond use so careful with the %!

Re: Safety glasses hygiene
Same here - in they go into the dishwasher using Napisan instead of Finish power balls and rinsed and left to dry overnight. If Napisan is good enough for disenfecting infants clothing then it is more than good enough for rendering safety glasses bacteria free. Individual antiseptic wipes? Time cons...

Re: insect collecting and killing
A Killing jar. Usually in field work, insects are collected into a killing jar. Killing jars may be in any size but seldom need to be larger than a pint. Select a jar with a tight fitting lid. Killing jars can be made simply by adding a few strips of paper towels to a jar and then adding a few drops...

Automatic transmission fluid - 400mls with 100mls of metho and leave to soak overnight. Glycerin also works well if not AzNu from plumbers rejuvinates rubber washers and works a treat on rubber bungs (drag racers use it to soften tyres before a race)

We've got two but I use only one - when it explodes I'll move the other one across from another block. I still hand wash anything delicate but bulk everyday items I throw in the dishwasher - works pretty well on lab coats also!! I told my girlfriend that, she almost flipped! Typical bloke!

Re: physics
500V is pretty massive but look at the amps that are drawn at that voltage. 240V is mains - your voltage is approaching 3 phase! 240V is dangerous because it is very much in sync with heart pulses and therefore can be quite lethal - more so suprisingly than 3 phase.
