Re: Year 10 DNA Pracs.
I've attached what we do. It is a bit more intensive than the zip lock bag method, but it eliminates the use of bags which is good for the environment.

A suitable demo?
I have been asked to post this on here by another school. The following is the procedure that was put on Riskassess by the teacher requesting the prac. It is to be a teacher demo. 1. Add a third to half of a teaspoon of solid CuCl2 to a medium beaker (250 mL). 2. Add approximately 5 mL of ethanol an...

Also from Science Assist, Laboratory pressure cookers must contain a pressure gauge, a control and pressure relief valve and be able to reach a pressure of 15psi (103kPa) and a temperature of 121°C. These sterilisers can be purchased from biological suppliers however costs vary and schools need to s...

Re: Disposal of used agar plates
Taken from Science Assist, Microwave ovens Microwave ovens are not a suitable alternative to an autoclave or laboratory pressure cooker as they do not provide moist heat in the form of steam under pressure and therefore, will not sterilise. Microwaves penetrate unevenly and there can be ‘hot spots’ ...

Science Supply Australia and Omega Scientific both sell film canisters as well. A bit more expensive, but might work out for you.

Re: Ordering for Practical Lessons
As for teachers checking CSIS - it seems rough that Labbie says the labbie was responsible for checking this. You would think that checking the rating on the chemical would be part of the teacher's risk assessment?? I totally agree Merilyn. The teachers are the ones in charge of the class doing the...

When you check their website it says;
"Do not send in medical waste, this includes material contaminated with blood or bodily fluids. Other types of protective gear like hair nets, ear plugs, and lab coats or garments are not accepted in this box."

We often burn cheezels for the grade 8 energy prac. I have kept a box that has the use by date of 2010 and put the new packet in the old box and send into the classroom, no one wants to eat cheezels that are that far out of date!

Oh Sorry! I didn’t realise it was NSW only :whistling2: moving right along… apparently it has been bought out by Alpha Chemicals. Not the same Alpha Chemicals that were allegedly stealing from them, as per the letter that Silform sent around?! :? I only ever bought 2 chemicals from them and were lo...

Re: Chemical quality
Has Silform folded? tried getting to their website and it was saying it doesn't exist. This is being discussed today on the ASET mailing list. Are you on that? It's worth signing up. I've just sent an email asking if it's ok for me to post the ASET member's email content here. I didn't want to shar...

Re: Banning certain plastics in schools
I agree Marama - I am sure we will find a way around it. I'm still using plastic straws only because there was nearly a full box of them here when I started four years ago. And I will struggle to find an alternative to clip lock bags (although this article doesn't mention them). As for the items we...
