Re: Glass tubing
would something like this work? It's not capillary but still quite narrow and has the markings on it already. The 2ml ones are similar OD size to the other tubing. We have some capillary tubing here (a long length). It was purchased from Serrata which is now MTA before my time. I couldn't find it on...

Re: Methyl Orange Indicator
Jumping into a very old thread here... But I have a request for methyl orange indicator for a titration. It's CaCo3 and HCl. Should I be recommending a different indicator? This one only does from pH 3.2-4.4 according to google, but the bottle (screened methyl orange) says Alkaline green, acid magen...

Re: Agar plates - how old is too old?
Science Assist says to use within a month to prevent drying out. I'd say if it isn't dry it should still work! I'm interested to hear your results

Re: standardisation of NaOH
Not a great lot of help, Rosalie but our guys do a standardisation of NaOH and they get 0.1M NaOH and 0.1M HCl. I agree - wouldn't give them conc acid That's the one I am familiar with. I think they're using new textbooks this year. New teacher as well. Brick cleaner was the alternative "brick...

Re: standardisation of NaOH
What concentration of HCl do you send out for the sodium carbonate standardisation prac? The text book asks for concentrated but I'm not giving them that! RiskAssess has 8-10M is ok for 11&12. (Conc. is teacher only).

Re: Is this Cornflour ?
I just tried the one our HT wants .You can use Conditioner or Dishwashing liquid . Both seemed to work about the same . although the amount of liquid seems more than required . it is sticky . And yes , the mystery stuff in my bags seems to be Cornflour , well at least it works the same as known Cor...

Re: Is this Cornflower ?
It's just cornfour and water mixed together (food colouring added if you want). For some reason, nearly every recipe I've ever seen says to add the food colouring at the end and work it through but if you add it to the water before mixing the cornflour in then you don't get it all over your hands an...

Re: mini SDS
Rosalie - you're an ex-firefighter!! OMG! That is a surprise. Yep, agree, we are a school with comparatively small quantities of chemicals. Maybe if it was a fire in a chemical factory they may want to check on their way. I am full of surprises!! :cheesy: I should be about 160yo for all the career ...

Re: mini SDS
As an ex-fire fighter who attended 2 school fires, we did not have time to be checking manifests in the event of a fully involved structure fire and they were both overnight so without a contact person on site there is no way to log on to the system anyway. It sounds nice in theory, but in reality y...

Gosh, has it really been a year since you left for your big holiday?? I agree, it was a very long 11 weeks! We are straight back into full swing today (no pupil free day for us) but I have no pracs booked in as yet so I'm planning a crazy-big clean up today! Last term saw me helping out in admin mor...

Re: Cleaning of Wicks Used in Alkanols prac
We don't have enough spirit lamps at this school so unfortunately they do need to be reused (mainly due to the conductivity stars not being able to be used with bunsens these days, so we have to use the burners with metho). I just wash the wicks in hot water in the sink and let them air dry. I don't...

Re: frozen hearts - help!
Soak them in a bucket with nappysan overnight at least, then throw in the machine. What comes out comes out and what doesn't - depends how fussy your school is. President lab coats sell theirs for a pretty good price and great quality if you need to replace. These ones are brand new! This was the f...

Re: frozen hearts - help!
Following on... Some of the kids were quite messy and I wasn't able to wash the lab coats until this morning. The blood stains haven't come out - any suggestions as to how to get them back to white? I generally use the food tech washing machine and then put it through on an empty cycle afterwards bu...
