Re: Use of Borax in schools

According to riskassess, it is 7-12 at <4.5% wt/wt and 11-12 for >4.5% solutions but teacher only as a powder. You can still make slime with 4% solution but you end up with liquid in addition to the slime and then you just gently rinse it off once the slime has formed.

Re: Cleaning Glassware Fast!

If you've got enough space, set them up to soak in napisan! warm water and a sprinkle of napisan often works (not always). It's my first go-to for any glassware stains. After that, I have a 2L bottle of HCL that I pour into the glassware and soak then return to the bottle. It's labeled as cleaning H...

Re: Distillation flasks

I've bought them from Science Supply (I think) or maybe Haines. Just be careful, someone bought a receiver adaptor last year when I was on leave and mustn't have checked the $120 price tag. I would have just used one kit for spare parts and saved the money. Just looked on SSA and they have simple k...

Re: Distillation flasks

We mainly seem to be missing the glass stoppers that go in the top (both the closed and thermometer holder ones). I went through 6 kits the other day to find one! They have hardly been used since I've been here. Are they still a part of compulsory pracs? Maybe teachers are opting for easier/less exp...

This must explain why it is so hard to find spare parts for distillation kits! Has anyone had success recently?

Just wanna say I wish they would re-release this subscription! We had it at my old school and it was so good! My current school is lacking in the embedded specimen department :cry2:

Re: Upgrading old Caralina Electrophoresus for Dye

bigmack - I'm curious! I've just bought the BandIT from southern bio that uses these dyes. Do they work just as well in normal agar instead of agarose? And the buffer of bi carb soda - what concentration do you use? I bought some practice wells with it so my plan was to use food colouring in glyceri...

barley seeds

I've got a class planting genetically selected barley seeds soon. Is there anything I need to know or do they just scatter them on the top of the soil in a container?

Re: Disposal of damaged lithium batteries

So I followed some links and ended up here: https://www.fire.nsw.gov.au/page.php?id=9396 "Place leaking or damaged (but not overheated or off-gassing) batteries in a clear plastic bag or container and take them to a Community Recycling Centre [external link] or a Household Chemical CleanOut eve...

Re: Disposal of damaged lithium batteries

We had a garbage truck have to dump it's load behind our school after the rubbish caught fire, they believe from a lithium battery. Thankfully we were downwind. I once went to a garbage truck fire when I was a fire fighter. It was a disgusting job! I'm not sure if they worked out the cause but gosh...

Re: repurposing conical flasks

We have soooooo many of them! Way too many. We don't have stoppers to fit them so they're pretty useless (although I'll probably have to buy something to plug them up for whatever we end up doing with them). I do have some set aside that still "look nice". We have heaps of 250ml ones and 5...

repurposing conical flasks

Has anyone got any ideas on what you could do with small (100-150ml) conical flasks? They are a bit too small for terrariums I think. They aren't really usable in science anymore as they don't have any measurements and we haven't used them in the 4 years I've been here. Our school does a Christmas M...

Depending on how much time you have up your sleeve, Perth Scientific have them cheaper but postage may be a killer.

Re: pH Buffers

Do you have the other buffer solutions? pH 7 and 10? Can you use those to do a 2 point calibration and hold off ordering the tablets for when you're placing another order? Sorry I haven't tried the "home made" ones you've linked. I don't actually know what my plan is at this school as we h...

Re: Dissection blocks

We had those Grey shallow trays at old school to Rosalie . Apparently they were Photographic development trays . I couldn't find the original ones for Love nor Money but I did find some Newer ones .They all had a small pourer on one corner . I thought they looked strange but the Bio teacher said it...
