Re: waste from dissections
If the teachers don't want to take it home for their dogs , it goes in the skip . Same logic as Merilyn . Bins stink long before they are collected and my stuff probably doesn't make it dramatically worse .

Re: Ferrous sulphide sticks
Wow, good find. We have one, its the same size as our flam liq, I think 200L approx. It was here when I got here. I think it's great, stores everything and easy to find it all. Thanks labbassistant I told SAM about all this and with out question and the usual rant about having no money ,BOOM , Flam...

Re: Ferrous sulphide sticks
Well I'm really having a fine time in the Chem store . After cleaning up a busted jar of Magnesium Powder , I went looking for all the Flammable solids and making a collection of them when I discovered two jars of Ferrous Sulfide have expanded and cracked the jars . I'm getting quite nervous that la...

Re: Plastic bottles/jerry cans for solutions
Found some more disintegrating Jerry Cans . These ones looked OK until I gave them a squeeze .They crumbled instead of squishing. Doubt it was 0.001HCl that did this , perhaps it had something else in it before it was repurposed . Be wary folk , seems these things may have a time limit . BTW , these...

Re: Magnesium powder for yr 12 Chemistry: Riskasses
WOW Bigmack, the things you so find. Yup  ....this is what happens when you inherit someone's job that liked to keep everything :whistling2: So the I discovered the practicalities of disposing of 100gms of this powder . Firstly , its this much . 100gm Magnesium Powder.jpg I started with abou...

Re: Magnesium powder for yr 12 Chemistry: Riskasses
Just discovered this . Needless to say I'm a bit nervous dealing with it . obviously it has slowly absorbed moisture as our Chem store is cold and damp and has expanded and cracked the jar . There is now a split about 1-2mm wide that is exposing more air and moisture . I'm going to keep a small amou...

Re: storage of corrosives
Scrap metal sounds the go to me . Especially if your local Tip takes it for free . You'd most likely have to pay for general waste there .
I think I would ask the GA to get rid of it . Not your problem .

Re: Brains, hearts, kidneys & plucks
Common problem, Bigmack. I think the abattoirs have to do this to check for disease/parasites. I think you are right Merilyn and ottenC. Certainly all the ones I've got that were sold through butchers for Human consumption had been sliced like that . Interesting that these I ordered as offal were n...

Re: Instead of Matches.......
Our Chem teacher has always used Lighters . This is a guy that doesn't trust a kid for two seconds . He says kids are stupid and they only use a lighter for a few seconds before it gets too hot to play with . Self regulating safety . He is amazed at how kids use lighters upside down . Regardless , I...

Re: Brains, hearts, kidneys & plucks
Just got my parcel of Hearts with attachments from the local Abattoir.
Seems like the Slaughterman forgot who was meant to be doing the dissections
Oh well, I'm pleased I asked for a few extras .

Re: Nail Biting
Bigmack - I think the bittering agent here is Methanol Methanol is a denaturant .It is added so the ethanol can be sold Excise tax free . It actually has no smell or taste and is unfortunately why it gets mixed with ethanol and passed to kids to drink on the cheap . They have no idea they are drink...

Re: Nail Biting
LOL , soak them in Methylated Spirits . Our Australian stuff contains a strong bittering agent ...not particularly non-hazardous though....but it stops Winoe's drinking it without poisoning them .Unlike America where they actually add Methanol . :whistling2: have to ask why a teacher would choose to...

AFAIK , EUD has to include a drivers licence. So you can’t claim that the school is purchasing it . It would have to be a nominated person with a valid licence .

Re: Plastic bottles/jerry cans for solutions
Surffice to say that it is normally stored in the chem store rather than just on the shelf . But the Chem store needs a good sort out . Once I have git rid of all the weird molarity 2litre Gerry cans , I’ll address the DG issue

Re: Plastic bottles/jerry cans for solutions
I just bought some from Haines . $4.95 for the 1 litre ones .I prefer Haines ones as they have a wider Lid than the ones pictured above which makes labelling the Lids a bit easier . MTA ones have no lids , you have to buy them extra . I noticed that a lot of our Jerry Cans are deteriorating . Partic...

I was asked for this today to test for Primary and Secondary and Tertiary Alcohols . It took a bit of finding so I thought I'd post it here in case anyone else is looking for a recipe . We only needed about 5mls , so I just used a 1/10th of both . It didn't foam, get hot or anything nasty . I did ma...
