Test Tube Brushes
Hi All, This week I am trying to track down a supplier for test tube brushes. I need a few sizes, but most importantly, the small ones for the micro test tubes(10x75mm). The ones I have are approx. 19cm long, with 55mmx5mm white bristle brush. I would like to get the same sort, as they seem to last w...

Hi guys, I was about to put my hand up for a copy of this prac too, but after checking, I have found the labbie "Waddle", hasn't been on this site for over a year. My guess is that she has moved on. Just thought I would let you know, because if you're checking your fax machines daily, you ...

Ian, I know what you mean. I mentioned in a P.M to you, that I have started this year at a new school, and I have been so busy, I don't know whether I'm coming or going!
I'm feeling a little alien too, hence my new avatar!!
Cheers,
Lisa

Re: Duran/Schott Bottles
Hi Robyn, Good thinking. Thanks for reminding me that quite often, you get what you pay for, and you're right, for chemical solutions, it might pay to go with the brand names. Rosalie, What a great idea. I will certainly try my luck around the hospitals.Any freebies you can get are great, because,as y...

Hadn't given it much thought, until I read this post. My work colleagues have always referred to me as the Lab Manager, even though I do not have extensive training in the area, and I am relatively new in the field.(two years) I,too, refer to myself as the Lab Manager, because that's what I do. Mana...

Hi Robyn, Our main supplier of "stuff" in S.A. is Omega Scientific. In the catalogue supplied to us, is a section that lists Hodson Optical Kit Equipment and spares. I don't know if what you're after is listed, but it might be worth a phone call. The manager, James Willmore, is always very...

Re: pH OF WATER
This subject recently came up in another forum, and, along with the Vertex, a Millipore filter was also mentioned. Does anyone have experience with both, as I would like to know the pros and cons between the two. Even if you've got one or the other, any tips appreciated. The kind of info I'm after i...

Re: Electronic balances
Hi Rita, We use Adam balances here.(and others)I have six Adam ones that are for student use. However, the maximum weight for them is 200g. Even the one I use in prep room only goes to 350g. This suits us, because we only use them for weighing small amounts of chemicals, but you mentioned you want t...

Hi Ian, Sorry, I can't actually help with your question, but could you tell me which catalogue you saw the Di-Ammonium hydrogen Orthophosphate, and Ammonium Di-hydrogen Orthophosphate? We use both of these in Chem, but my normal supplier has neither, and I'm running low. Thanking you in advance. Che...

Add some life to the Labs
Hi All, As I have only Yr 11 & 12 students at my school, and most of them are into exams, this is my time to sort, clean, repair etc. I have seven labs, two each of chem, bio and physics, and one geology. Yesterday, I was clearing old notices off the boards in the chem labs, and realised they loo...

No Richard, variety is the spice of life, they say. Gives us all something to look at. (maybe you could get a pic of Brian in his lab coat!) That would be a good avatar. Ian, like Richard, I just google avatars, and pick a pretty one. You may have noticed I recently changed from a tiger, to a macaw....

Re: White Board Makers
They sound good Estelle, might give them a go. We are still trialling a couple of other brands (Auspen and Pilot Wyteboard Markers) and they seem good, but these sound better value. Do you have a product code or something, to ensure I get the right ones?

Lisa

Hi Helen,
Our chem teachers use Kaolin when they do Fractional distillation of crude oil. Don't ask me what part it plays, but I know they get good results.
Cheers,
Lisa

Re: Microwave ovens
Hi Lorrae, Just bought one. I use mine to make the agar for agar plates, because I hate pressure cookers, and the microwave recipe I use is simple, and works well. I used to borrow one from the staffroom when I needed it (they have two), but the teachers kept complaining they had to queue for the re...

Re: how to remove waterglass marks from glass
Hi Rainbow-sky, I'm doing my glasswear too. I start with a good long soak in Napisan. But, like you, a few come out clear when wet, cloudy when dry. So from there, I've wiped mine over with metho on cotton wool. That worked for some. The rest, I very carefully swirled a small amount of HCl in them, j...
