Re: What are you doing this Holidays
Wow! Hawaii sounds much more exciting than the Central Coast. I am going to visit my mum and brother and my girlfriend whom I have known since I was 5 (that was just after the dinosaurs died out!). Enjoy Hawaii and don't forget to share lots of photos! - check out the show HOW THE EARTH WAS MADE on ...

Re: Chemical labels
Good Morning!
I have previously (pre-GHS) used this program to label my chemicals and have had no trouble with it. This updated one appears to cover the criteria needed, I am inclined to renew to label Maker 5. I find it saves a lot of time. What do others think?

Re: Drosophila / Fruit fly breeding for genetics
Hey guys,
There is a program called DrosophiLab (freeware) which enables you to virtually breed fruit flies with characteristics you choose. I don't know if it's of use to anyone, but I thought I'd just "fly" that one out there!

Re: Tuning fork and measuring cylinders
Hi Dime, I had a look at the prac, we don't do it here. I suppose it is because of breakage. I reckon if you hit the bench rather than the measuring cylinder breakage will decrease tho. I sincerely question the logic of the writers thinking the little cherubs won't hit a glass measuring cyclinder wi...

Thanks Smiley. I think I read something in a ChemWatch bulletin. I must go and recheck past issues. Gee, I wish my memory was like it used to be!

Welcome Tekie,
I'm like Dime and use Chemtalk as my "kick the day off" heart starter (along with a cup of coffee)! This site has been my saviour, and the many wonderful people who input into this site are my extended family! I hope you enjoy Chemtalk as much as I do!

Re: human pathogens in agar plates
Hi Lada, I think the discussion of those type of swabs have occurred elsewhere in Chemtalk. I have used the type you are talking about, and they are great but a little bit pricey. Some one here said they actually poured agar onto the swab, but in industry you peel back the cover plastic, and pour st...

Re: press type agar plates-how to make them?
Hi Bindibadgi,
I used to use those Petrifilm type swabs when I worked at Heinz. They are very good, only we just used a bit of distilled water to dampen them for the swab.
Very easy to count colonies, and finally to dispose of.

How about methanol or ethanol and ethanoic acid - gives you a solvent smell?

I find adding a few drops of oil of cloves helps it last longer, i.e it's not the smell that makes you throw it away.
