Re: New To Lab Land

Hi Sammy Hunt your shelves for a white file with a green spine insert "Science Laboratory Manual". Created just for us in WA by our wonderful Regional Technicians. Also go online and use the RTG website, they are our best resource over here in the west. Things get easier over time, so hang...

Re: Do you go to faculity meetings?

I attend most faculity meetings and it has always been expected that I would attend. We have had 5 different HOLA's in my time here, and it has made no difference as to my going. I have always been treated as an active member of our team and the longer I stay the greater my role has become. Occasion...

Re: clinical thermometers

All mercury clinical thermometer need to be shaken down after each use to below 36 degrees. When I was nursing the students always had to do this we ended up with very sore wrists as you have to really flick them.

If the tab has been removed. Just cover the hole with some tape and then you should be able to copy the tape. Hope this helps.

Re: Lab assistant by choice.

Lab Tech by choice, 14 years now in three different schools. But I am the opposite of Ian, I am now studying to be a primary teacher. 14 years in the same job is just to long, no matter how good the job. My children are now all grown and my husband is embarking on a new career. So I am going to try ...

Re: Bunsen Burners

Hi Tina
I find that when the orange flame burns OK but goes out when turned up to blue: it is usually a small spider web that causes just not quite the right gas to air ratio and it just goes out. I just clean them out with a very small bottle brush. Hope this is of some use.

 the idea of using the pressure cooker in a fume hood. Our new fume cupboard is about to be commisioned =D> the 1st one I have ever had that will actually work properly. I can't bring myself to sterilise with anything less than a pressure cooker (old Path Deptment habits die hard) I am always l...

Re: freezing eyes

Hi we have been freezing our eyeballs for a number of years. We use fish eyes as they are cheaper and easier to get hold of (I remove them from the heads :yuck: ) We have no trouble with excessively cloudy lenses, but I suppose it depends on what the students are doing with the lenses. Ours only rea...

Robyn,
 all your ideas. But where do you get a dissecting needle small enough to fit in the jet hole. I have trouble getting fine fuse/copper wire thru it.

Re: Eyes for dissection

Over here in Geraldton WA because of the quantity we require (25x yr 8 & 9 classes) 250 eyes. We now go with dissecting fish eyes.Just a round lens instead of an oval one. We freeze (in saline water) the eyes after our gill dissection pracs :yuck:

Yes, I'm a shared responibility believer too. Students as well as possible, teachers job checking how well students clean and storting out, plus counting back in resources. Then we finish off with complete clean and restock of classroom resources. Our cleaners are only responsible for the floors, st...

Hi Here in WA we have to store our specimans in a 2-Phenoxyethanol and water mixture. This is because all flamable liquids (meths etc) must be stored in flamables cabinet and this mixture is inert. It was a big effort when we changed all our specimans but now it's really good. Not only can we dispay...

Dunny Roll Rocket

Hi All
I'm trying to trackdown the instructions for "Making a Dunny Roll Rocket" Lance Taylor Rockingham Senior High Scool presented it at CONSTAWA one year. I have two pages of instructions but they appear to be incomplete. Any Help greatfully received.
