Re: Sodium hydroxide in plastic bottles
If its stored in a glass bottle over time soidum silicate forms. For our sorts of pracs the amount of Si aren't deterimental to our results. You do have to have a plastic top not a glass stopper as the glass will freeze shut. Having said that I store mine in plastic bottles.

Hi
I've just bought 3 100x objective lens to replace ones that had lens falling out. For our microscopes it was $39/objective. Got them from Industrial & Scientific Supply Co.

Cool Refractive index prac
Hi One of the teachers here just showed me this cool thing. Glycerine and glass have the same refractive index. Soooo if you put a little beaker inside a big beaker then fill the beakers with glycerine the little beaker disappears. It may be old hat to all you clever folk out there but it was new to...

Our head of science is also the WHS officer and came up to see me the other day after she'd been in a meeting to ask if I knew we were changing to the GHS. That was the first I'd heard of it outside chemtalk but she was glad to hear we are all aware of whats happening.

WE're just about to do one where they will build a cell membrane using coloured paper, string and glue. Haven't done this before as an assessment but they have done it in class last year.I think last year we gave them slides with onion epidermis stained with methylene blue.

Re: Eye Dissection
Scalpels are only used by senior classes here, if it necessary for junior years to have something sharper than scissors we give them gem blades (one sided razors blades). I'm still feeling nausea over the kid who swallowed the eyeball. I'm impressed there wasn't more than dissection goo to clean up.

Re: Tryspin and film
Thanks Smiley that is the actual prac we are doing but there is no result on the film and I wonder if we need higher concentrations of trypsin. In which case we're shot ducks because we're out of trypsin. Have tried varying the temp as well. I put the exclaimation mark there because I was in a hurry...

HI Rosalie If thats what you and your husband are considering I'd say stop considering and DO IT. We did in 2007. Husband, 3 kids and I went for 14 months and it was the best 14 months of our lives. We only had a very basic camper trailer, more like a tent really and I thought it may be tough, 5 of ...

Hi Rosalie
This is just a thought but there is a guy called Rod Aggett from Edu Supplies . He does workshops on maintaining/servicing your own microscopes. That could be good.

Re: Flame test kits
When we do the bunsen in a bottle method we use a different station for each chemical. We've also used paddle popsticks soaked and then dried so that crystals of the salt you are using on the sticks. That way the kids don't actually get any chemical bottles.

It really was fantastic. I learnt so much, ate so much great food and loved meeting all the other labbies. A huge THANK YOU to all you wonderful ladies that organised such a great event. Easy to see why everyone I talked to had been coming to these conferences for years. I'll be back for sure.
Thanks
