Re: Risk Assess and labels
Sodium hydroxide solutions have changed on Risk Assess. It says even seniors can't use greater than 1M now. CSIS allowed up to 4M.

Re: Moh's Hardness Test
Thanks for those items for scratching. I will organise some for next year.
What we used was like a smooth small tile. I finally found some at Serrata. 'White streak plates' is what they are called and they come in pack of 10. Different coloured streaks show when different items scratch the plate.

Re: Lab Coats Vs Aprons
Students have never worn lab coats nor aprons for classes here.
Seniors helping with the making of Liquid Nitrogen Ice-cream wear the lab coats once maybe twice a year.
Drama students borrow them for a play/skit they are performing.

Moh's Hardness Test
Good Morning All We are buying new Moh's Hardness Kits. These kits no longer have a square plate in them. What is used as a substitute? What other items of known hardness do you use for scratching? A fingernail has hardness of 2.5 and a steel blade of a knife has hardness of 5.5. Thanks in advance, ...

Collimator
Hi All
Does anyone have/use a collimator? Our physics teacher asked if we had one...had never heard of it. A Google search told me what it was (to do with parallel light).
Would you let me know a supplier or other equipment you use it with, if you have one please?
Thanks
Rita

I received a "hazard alert" during the holidays. Recommendations on the alert sheet advise the whole set of Moh's Hardness Kits, not just the talc, be withdrawn and disposed of. Further advice will be forthcoming in the next week from CEO.

Re: DOTS on Chemicals
Hi All
What is the general rule when this occurs? Do we use the higher level dot? (I have been using the higher levels.)
For example, when we have situations like this with Hydrochloric Acid: >0.2 to <4M is green. >4M to <10M is orange
Thanks

I found a supplier ... Sigma Aldrich. $46.41 for 1G or $108.12 for 5G. Might give the purchase a miss and use experiment above.
Thank you

What year group and what else do they use for the mousetrap racers? Sounds like fun.

Inability to access some topics
Well, I just got a surprise.
Looking in the Safety with Chemicals forum, I clicked on the topic "disposing of potassium nitrate solution" and the screen went red with school notice saying I don't have permission to visit due to bomb hazard.
Hope you got an answer to your question.

Re: Bromothymol blue
Hi All I need to order more bromothymol blue powder and I am not sure which to buy. There is the "free acid" and sodium "salt" versions. Do I assume it is the free acid for both indicator solutions as the formula on the chemical bottle I have does not contain Na (Sodium)? The two...

Hello All Just been asked for Swedish Fish Candies. Anyone ever used these? They are for an adaptation prac. I have never seen nor heard of them, so wouldn't know where to look. Re: Chemwatch labels
Unfortunately there is no manufacturer as I prepared the solution following instructions from the reference book "The Laboratory". This is where my problems lie.
Guess I just have to go back to Chemwatch instructions on how to make own labels. Drat!

Chemwatch labels
I am having a terrible time trying to get a label for universal indicator. I have prepared solution from "The Laboratory".
Everything on Chemwatch is coming up in company names and with the wrong pH range. So frustrating!

Re: DOES YOUR SCHOOL HAVE AN AG FARM?
We have a farm and one Ag teacher. Ag comes under TAS here. Teacher is back teaching Science (Yr 9 only) this year after previous stints in variety of short courses.
I prepare pracs on few occasions. Ag use the labs when doing soil tests.
