Re: RiskAssess software
Hi Judy We've been using the risk assess software for a couple of terms and I love it. As you say having a lab schedule to check on is fantastic. I haven't had any complaints from the teachers except when they've put in a wrong date. I then remind them that that is not actually a problem with the so...

Hi Guys
I've just been asked for zinc oxide for the prac where you heat it and it changes colour. I haven't got any. Does anyone know if there is a substitute I could use? for period 1 tomorrow.
thanks Krysia

Re: Broth for Pasteur experiment
Thanks Been looking and I think peptone is a general term for any of the variuos water soluble compounds formed in digestion and tryptone is a more specific term relating directly to componds formed by pancreatic digestion with the aid of trypsin. I'll follow the lead of my peers and I'll make a bro...

We always ask if anyone has a heart condition or pacemaker. If you have a pacemaker you can't use the VDG. At my sons school they joined the kids together in a line and then the last in line lit a bunsen with his spark. Its a boys school and they were all very impressed. The teacher also did it with...

Re: Broth for Pasteur experiment
Hi Guys
We're doing the Pasteur experiment and every year I've used peptone. Ran out, order more and have got to work to find delivered Tryptone (Casein Trypsic Peptone). I don't even know what that is, any ideas what I would use that for.

Re: Retort Stands, Clamps and Boss Heads
Hi Lorrae
I recently bought from Serrata they were the blue cork lined ones but they aren't as strong as we'd like so I've just order a new batch of metal ones from Science supply at $10.95 each. Hope they work. Frustrating when they break after very little use.

Hi Kate
We do stimulants and depressents with Daphnia. We get Daphnia from Southern Biological and put them in different solutions of caffiene( 1 No-Doz tablet/1L of water), ethanol 1mL/100mL water, salicylic acid 1g/100mL and distilled water then watch/time them under the microscopes.

So when something goes from a moderate to extreme hazard alert code does that make it for teacher use only and perhaps Yr11 & 12?

OMG OMG OMG I just asked my Head if I could go and she has no problem with it. I just have to be able to prove it will benefit the school, well how about if I don't go they don't have a lab tech any more........ No they'll just find someone else. How about the immense knowledge I will return with an...

Re: Periodic Table
We recently bought 5 that were printed directly on to roller blind from Graphic Education. They look great and we need the roller type as in our beautiful new labs there is absolutely no wall space to put up any posters. BUT after a couple of uses the edges started to fray and the loose bits of thre...

Re: Corrosive Liquids cabinet
Hi
just read this post with great interest. Went to the corrosive cupboard just now for the first time in a while. There are two shelves, the bottom of top shelf is wet to touch and the bottles on the shelf below it are covered in white dust!!!!????? Has anyone else had this happen?

sodium sulphate
Hi
I'm wondering if any one can explain something to me. I made a 1M sodium sulphate with hydrated powder and the solution was neutral. I ran out of that so made a 1M solution using anhydrous sodium solution and the pH is 10. Shouldn't it be neutral? What am I missing? Can anyone help?

Re: Thymol/Ethyl Alcohol mix for crystals
I'm guessing you'd make it the same as other saturated solutions, dissolving small amounts till no more dissolves. Although the emphasis in that statement is on the "guessing".
