Re: Hot Water Bath
We still have the old copper bowls with graded interlocking copper rings. Half the time we just put a big beaker on a low heat on a hotplate, and use that.

Re: STORAGE OF SODIUM METAL
Store in a separate spot to 3, 4.1 and 4.2. Quite safe while it is under paraffin, and will not readily react until it is in water. Safe to transfer into more paraffin using tongs or forceps. Always insist on a small amount for reactions in a trough in a fume hood. I have one teacher who uses too mu...

Re: Copper Sulfate Crystals Take Home?
Not allowed to take any chemicals home. If they want to make borax crystals they can do it at home as well as copper sulphate ones. All this stuff is easily available to the public. Personally I don't even trust them to behave with sherbet, and just said no to taking their slime home. It ends up all...

Re: double fume hoods
Mine is double and sort of adjacent to the class sitting area, so the kids are looking the other way, then when they do a prac requiring fume hood they come over to the fume hood, the teachers demo bench is on castors and can be moved so the kids can see what's happening. Not a problem unless it is ...

Re: Risk Assessment
I have copied smiley's post to show my HOD, I am struggling to get staff to all use riskassess. I absolutely love it for my labelling. The only problem is the lack of predictive text. Having to type in the whole word when you put in the equipment required etc.

Re: normal acetic acid
I know what they probably want, I'm just being annoyed at stupid pracs.labbassistant wrote: ↑07 Mar 2022, 10:54 That's what I would guess.
Normal vinegar is 4-6% and also equals to 1M, and for dilute I'd probably go 0.1M
Have you asked them what they actually want?

Re: Let’s talk fridges!
I have a fridge freezer, but would love a bigger freezer section, and a bar fridge for anything the kids will put in their mouths, straws, cotton buds etc. and my food. During covid we had to live and work as alone as possible, so I still use it for my stuff.

Re: Wanting to purchase
I found it. It was in a box I hadn't yet put up high. Is this what you are looking for? This looks like it would only hold about 250ml. What would you use this for? I have distillation set ups, but we dont use a flask like this. Curious, it is a lovely little flask. I have a heap of the big golf cl...

Maybe Haines, they made up my quick fit as the size we use was no longer available. They have 19/26 but not sure if they have a flask.

normal acetic acid
I have a year 10 prac which asks for "Normal Acetic acid" and 'Dilute Acetic acid', never had this before, I am guessing concentrate glacial acetic acid is not what the teacher wants, but I am tempted. What would you suggest? Factors which effect the rate of reaction. ((Possibly vinegar an...

Re: Radioactive Rocks
I want some. My radioactive sources freaked me out when I first started so I contacted the Melb Uni, some boffins came and took them away. Now all I have is smoke alarms and the residual readings from dirt etc. It is worth studying what strength and sort of radioactive waves/isotopes you have. Most ...

I just read this thread again and after 30 years of doing flame tests realised saturated solutions are the go. I have been cleaning bunsens since the last flame test prac where the kids drop salts into the turret and block the jet.

I am going to just repeat what I have said for a few years, we cannot get the magnesium ribbon to burn, been going for the entire lesson, but alas it will not become MgO, it confounds me as we used to do it every year and it worked. Lift the lid off a bit, loose coil in the bottom of a crucible, big...

Re: barium nitrate solution.
Thanks I will go with the 0.1M, but why would The Laboratory give bench strength that clearly doesn't work? I did double check with another book and it also gave 0.5M.

barium nitrate solution.
The Laboratory shows 0.5M is bench strength for Barium Nitrate, but at that strength (130.50g per litre) it wont dissolve. I have a prac for year 10 which requires Barium Nitrate solution. No recipe. No strength. help.

Re: free delivery of equipment/chems.
I shop around, for example Nisbets for trolleys, but Westlab have really upped their game. I ran a little PD day for local lab techs a couple of years ago and a Westlab rep came all the way out (in country Victoria) to do demos and answer our questions. Always worth a quick chat to Sales. They have ...
