Ammeters have protection diodes that can burn out when they get too much current. Replacing these usually fixes most of them. Ammeters also have shunts to give different ranges of amps. Nobles ultra pure water from Woolies supermarket. In 10 or 5 litre pack. Costs about 70cents a litre. It has a low conductivity. I use this when making 1M silver nitrate and it is perfectly clear (no cloudiness).

Deionising water is done by tiny deionising beads. It removes the ions. The best type let the water drip though the beads giving them time to remove the ions.
