Re: Environmental friendly Disposable Gloves?
Well, look what I found! https://glovesnow.com/guide-to-disposable-nitrile-gloves/ Are Nitrile Disposable Gloves Recyclable? Yes, Nitrile Disposable Gloves are recyclable in Australia. They can be recycled, however they need to go in a special separate recycling bin, as opposed to your standard rec...

Re: Environmental friendly Disposable Gloves?
Had a look - keep in mind that the first ones, Australian Organics are food handling gloves, don't appear to be chemical resistant (unless I missed something). Second ones, they say they break down rapidly but what to? Microplastic?? Third ones look good, they say break down into organic matter alth...

Re: printers
We have a printer in our science staffroom which adjoins the prep room. The coordinator has his own office and own printer. They are B&W laser printers, so fine for printing chem labels (which are quite legal in B&W). Our IT guys look after toner. We get our paper from a general college supp...

Re: standardized NaOH
Hi all, Can someone explain making a primary standard to me? I do not understand this at all. We have some made up from the previous labbie but she retired and I'll need to make more. We used 0.1m oxalic as the primary standard and 0.1 NaOH (unknown conc to the students), but do I just make up 0.1m...

Re: Risk Assessment
Legislation states that the PCBU must manage risks - so identifying hazards, rating the risk of those hazards and then taking steps to control the risks. This is done by doing a risk assessment which is prepared by the person undertaking the activity (or in the case with children - the person runnin...

Re: gauze mats with solid centre
Think that's it. There was some problem a few years ago with these types of mats containing asbestos but any you purchase now would be fine. I've never had any experience with them to know if they last longer, work better etc.

Isn't copper carbonate insoluble in water? If you have some in water, I would filter it out and throw the filter paper in the bin.

Of course I remember you Lada! Lovely to hear from you. Thanks for the tips re. the Chem waste. I always hated Chemistry when I was at school (I liked Physics though!) now I find that Chem is a major part of my job and I am expected to be the "School Chemistry Expert". Funny how things tu...

Re: Volumetric flasks
Class A will be more accurate than B. If you are going to the trouble of using a volumetric flask, you may want to consider the Class A. But I'd keep it for myself, don't let teachers or students use it. If it is for student use, just get the Class B.

Re: storage of H2O2
It does deteriorate quickly so depends what you are doing with it. We used to do an enzyme prac test for Bio which consumed a lot and it needed to be accurate(ish). They are not doing that prac anymore so I'm not expecting to ever use up even the 500mL bottle now. I will probably throw half of it ou...

That is an odd request, Helen! God, next they'll want you to clean the tripods :yuck: :giggle: I guess try to work out what's on them and why they want them cleaned. Maybe just detergent and a cloth/scourer/brush. But as Rosalie says, make sure they dry quickly. Merilyn, I know right?!! :cheesy: :c...

Re: methylene blue
I was in the same boat, Rosalie - inherited a batch of methylene blue with a Chemwatch label. God knows what was in it. I ended up making up a new batch and labelling it as a percentage concentration. Was easier than trying to work out molarity. Also included the percentage of ethanol. I learnt the ...

Re: Tea Bag Prac.... need help
We use Tetley, Yorkshire (can buy in Woolies) and Lipton. All will work but the Tetley works the best.
We do this for Year 7 Taster Day - students get one of each to see which works the best.
