Re: Risk Assessment
Hi guys, Hope your year is better than the last couple. Just a heads up with riskassess putting the wrong chemical equations on labels. It has been frantic here with assessment exams and luckily the teachers have picked up errors. From memory it was silver nitrate and sodium carbonate. Don't know o...

I would have thought it would need bi-carb to get the fizz from the acid base reaction.

Thankfully we didn't re-subscribe to STILE this year. As you said it was wonderful for the teachers during lockdown, but some of the pracs, wow!

Re: Safety glasses hygiene
I stopped using the dishwasher for safety glasses last year due to a huge increase in breakages. They would come out of the dishwasher fine, but it appeared it was weakening the arms as they were snapping off as the students were putting them on. I went from 1 or 2 breakages a year to 2 or 3 a lesso...

Re: aluminium potassium sulphate and copper sulphate crystals
We evaporate off us much as we can then out for DG waste... it's a pain and costs but we are short on space so need to keep our DG store clear. Rather pay a few dollars and have our Chem store safe and clutter free. I evaporate it all off and reuse again next year for the same crystallisation prac.

We discussed Science ASSIST at our annual conference last month and encouraged schools to sign up. A reminder email as sent to all lab techs in Tasmania yesterday, so hopefully there will be a lot signing up from our state.

Re: iron standard solutions
0.0050% is 0.0050g made up to 100mL, so would be 0.025g for 500mL. I am fairly sure if you making standard solutions of iron the percentage will have to be of the iron not of, for example, iron chloride (or whatever other iron salt you are using).

Anniversary
Just saw that yesterday was my anniversary of joining chemtalk, I joined 14 years ago! Don't no how I survived before this forum (actually I do, I was always ringing up another Lab. Tech and annoying him!). We are so lucky to have this! Thanks for all the help over the years and for all the help in ...

Re: School Uniforms
Lab coats are mandatory here. Students must bring their own lab coats to each lesson. I have 4 spare (2 small and 2 medium) navy lab coats that can be borrowed if someone forgets. On the whole the students remember to bring theirs, due mainly because they don't want to stand out (everyone wearing a ...
