Metho and cotton tips are deffinantly the way to go to remove fungal growths from the optics of microscopes. Allow plenty of time to dry before re-installing them as they will never completly dry out in the confinds of the microscope body. As for never being quite in focus, it sounds like moisture i...

TAFE one day course

Hello again. I was wondering if any Labbies are considering attending the TAFE "Introduction to Data Loggers for Laboratory Support Staff" at Bankstown TAFE on either Tuesday 26th June or Wednesday 27th from the Central Coast. HT Science would like me to attend, so I was looking at possibl...

Equipment Repair

G'day all. We have a heap of volt and amp metres that are in need of repair and I was wondering if anybody uses a reputable and reliable repairer for these and other equipment on the NSW Central Coast. Sydneys Northern Beaches ok also as I work a second job in Hornsby and can take them if they can't...

We use Finish tablets or powder, but rinse off as much loose material as you can before placing in the dishwasher. Our dishwashers (Simpson Silencio 850's) seem fussy as to where you place the glassware inside. I took the advice from the forum on stains and soak in Napisan overnight for the really s...

If you are a state Govenment school your Senior administration officer will have all the relevant information for certificate 111 through TAFE NSW. It is also their responsability to ensure you and other SASS staff are kept fully up to date with ALL courses that you are entitled to. The school does ...

Thanks for that! I knew it could be done! I'll trace who the original suppliers were and hopefully they can provide a similar service.

Magnets

Does anyone have a procedure I could follow to re-energise magnetic bars. I know it can be done with car alternators so this should be fairly simple as I don't want to change the field polarity. Any ideas guys?

It is infinantly easier to modify the wooden slots into which they fit using a tool such as a Dremel or a (very) fine chisel and file than removing edges from brittle glass slides. Even if you have access to a industrial diamond type glass cutter, the amount you need to remove sounds minimal and it ...

Thanks! 1% solution makes it much far more managable with the dialysis tubing - it was far too thick beforehand to pour readily.

G'day Lee I've found this one works great! 23g Agar powder, 565ml of 0.1M Sodium Hydroxide solution, heat to simmer an add tiny (TINY!) amount of powdered phenolphthalein to make a deep pink. Makes anough for 565mls or 3 marg. containers to a depth of 1, 2 & 3cm. We make trays and require 2400ml...

G'day all!
Can anyone enlighten me on great/effective way of preparing 1 litre of 5% starch solution without it going gluggy? I'm currently blaming the hotplate!

We had this issue while I was at Wyong High school after a workcover NSW audit. They were working on 20 litres as being an absolute maximum before insisting on a proper metal cabinet being (correctly) installed. Same goes for school GA's here in NSW for fuels etc. Seems there was an issue a couple o...

We tend to keep our test tubes in the prep rooms in the boxes (100 per box) they were delivered to us in. That way they sit it rows of ten in (washable) moulded plastic trays, stack easily on trollies ready for pracs and handling breakages and chips are almost unheard of as they are never in contact...
