Re: Storage of Dichloromethane
When I worked in a school that had this chemical I stored it in its own lidded container of absorbent material in the locked toxic chemical storage cupboard.

Re: elephant toothpaste
Changing parameters in Elephants Toothpaste is a pretty basic individual investigation. Our low year 7 kids would do something like this, I wouldn't suggest a year 11 do it if they wanted to pass.

Re: Iron Thiocyanate Equilibrium
We use iron chloride...in fact a class are doing said prac as we speak! Prac is from Elements of Chemistry. We use Iron Chloride, potassium thiocyanide, Sodium Fluoride, Silver nitrate and the equalibrium mix which is iron chloride and potassium thiocyanide. Add other solutions to the base equilibri...

Re: Chemical Safety Procedures
Thanks Lyn,
I did a google yesterday and did download the QUL DETE one and I also did download something from VIC DET (haven't look at them yet. All the unis have them (and publicly available) so it is just a matter of reading (reading, reading!) and going from there I think.

It was because someone had played with settings and put it on simple. So it is back to normal (or as normal as Chemwatch is!) now.

Chemical Safety Procedures
Hi, As you can probably tell by my posts today I have my Chem Safety hat on :hi: Does your school have a Chemical Management Policy? and/or a written Chemical Procurement Procedure? that you know of. If so would you be willing to share? I have to write both these documents from scratch and am after ...

Chemwatch change???
I noticed yesterday afternoon that Chemwatch has suddenly got "backpack" in the top left hand corner instead of CHemFFX. My window tab also has Backpack instead of the usual FFX.
Have they done an update? Anyone else the same?

Re: Spirometers
Thanks. They are the ones we have also. However there is some talk (and I happen to agree) that there should be an inline filter or a one way valve system to stop internal contamination of the spirometer. A quick google shows you can get them for the various types of medical spirometers but I can't ...

Spirometers
For those of you who have spirometers do you use one way mouth pieces or mouthpiece filters? If so, where do you get them from?
Particularly interested if you use spirometers similar to these:

Re: Another question about SDS
It's a bit of a grey area. Things that are in a domestic quantity and used in a domestic manner then you don't strictly need an SDS. If they are a domestic product used in a non domestic manner or stored in a larger than domestic quantity then yes, you need an SDS. One could argue that the nail poli...

Does anyone do this? What type of lamp do you use and do you use cellophane for the coloured filters? We did it for the first time with mixed success. The light intensity worked...but not in the 30min time frame the teachers wanted but the light colour showed no difference no matter what. It is a gr...

I have ditched using the manifest option. It is just unworkable. I only use the sds's for some f the really old stuff we have (think Griffin & George vintage) I just go direct to the manufacturers website and download sds's. I am at an independent school and have complained multiple times to the...

Re: animal cells
You could simply with a piece of meat... however unless you have a microtome to cut it thinly enough, you won't make a very good slide. You could try a scraping but generally the cells will be distorted so there isn't much point really.

Do they mean because it was wet and will dry out? Otherwise if you just opened it dry I can't see the problem? (We just cut to length and get the students to do the rest)

Re: Do we have to keep exhaust fan on 24/7
The Australian standard give the minimum purge time. From memory it is around 5 minutes. In my old labs the exhaust would come on when the door opened and when it closed would stay on for 5 minutes. It also had a cycle for if the door wasn't opened in a period of time (like overnight and weekends) a...

We have 2 full time labbies and a part time (1-2 days) across two campuses. We have total, just over 1200 students from k-12. I have around 300-400 yr 11/12 and there are probably around 500-600 at the highschool with the remainder in primary.

How can you guys get no training in science? Part of school accreditation is for every staff member to be trained and have continuing professional development. In fact the WHS legislation states that adequate training must be provided.
