Length of work day

Post by beverley »

Just wondering if in the NSW DoE the principal can make you stay 5 minutes longer just because the office SASS like to take an our for lunch and I only take 45 minutes?

I don't see how, as long as you are working your registered hours and only taking your prescribed breaks?

Our award is 45 minute lunch and 10 minute inhouse morning tea break. Add them together and you get 55 minutes. Our office ladies have the times rolled together and add 5 minutes finishing at 3.35pm. I have always finished at 3.30pm for 25 years but now the Principal insists we all finish at the same time, even gives me office work at the end of the day to make sure I don't leave early!

I'm DoE and we only get 10 min morning tea and 30 min lunch. So do you work a 6.25 hour day and add your lunch break to that?

I'm also DoE and I work my 6.25 hour day and add 45 mins for lunch, making it a 7 hour day all up. Works for me! That way I get to take my breaks with the rest of the science faculty.

6.25 hours translates to 6 hrs & 15 mins so for a 5 day week that is 31.25 hours or 31 hrs and 15 mins.

It is all about the admin staff. They even get a catered morning tea every week with the Exec staff to which science, kitchen and library are excluded!

Seems very pedantic of the Principal. I would hate to have to account for every second of my day. Sometimes I work late, sometimes leave early. No one cares as long as my work is done, in fact my HOD encourages it. What happens if you go on excursion and miss your breaks? Does that mean you can leave 55 minutes early?

Wow. So they pay for relief for teachers to make up ratios? Our schools love support staff going on excursion as it saves them money. Teachers have to be replaced but support staff just have to catch up on their work. I really enjoy going out on excursions, it allows you to get to know both the teachers and the kids better and they are generally good fun.

We can still go on excursions here, often the school prefers to send support staff instead of a teacher if they can - it is a lot cheaper!
Maybe because we're a country school?
And yes, we are DoE. The paperwork is a pain but it is do-able if you really want to...

Often go on excursions and outer school activities.
have my lunch break when I want which normally is during the school lunch break and I have mine with the science staff.
But if I need to leave early I either start early or stay back the day before.
Must say I am very lucky as my school is very accommodating to the staff.
normal day starts at 8:30 and finish at 3:30 with a morning tea break and a lunch break.
