chemicals down the drain??

Post by joness »

Hi Everyone

I should probably know this as I have been in the job for a while now, however, I dont - Is there a list available on what chemicals can be tipped down the sink?? I tend not to tip any, but then I have waste issues. Can anyone help?

If you look up the CSIS folder for each individual chemical you have as you go, it will tell you if it can go down the sink. Most of them can. You will get to know what can't. Some (like copper sulfate) can be dehydrated and keep them till next time you need to use them. I keep a 're-claimed copper sulfate' container and don't use for senior classes.

Hi All,

A good thing to do (particularly with Copper Sulfate) and that is to filter the used Copper Sulfate and label this "for Crystalisation Only" for this type of Prac there is no need for purity and this can be used again and again.

Cheers,

The CIS handbook has it all in NSW.
If you do not want to re-use the copper sulfate solution, precipitate the copper by putting a wad of steel wool in the solution then the steel wool plus copper goes in the bin and the clear solution down the drain...easy.

If you look in appendix E Disposal of Waste Chemicals in the CSIS pages 28 & 29 there is a list of the Sydney Water limits for disposal of wastes to sewers. Limits are given in grams / day. This is for the whole school in the day. It has a list of limits allowed as litres of 0.1 M solutions per day. One notable one is only 600ml of 0.1 Copper Sulphate.

I imagine it would be good guidelines for anywhere, not just Sydney.

Contact your councils waste water dept. if in doubt. Different areas have different tollerances depending on the facilities they have to treat waste water.

Hunter water were very helpful & friendly when enquired with and they had leaflets specifically for schools about what exactly can go down the sink and in what quantities!

Ha! What does it explain Liz?!!! I did do this when I was about 5, but it was a toaster, not a power point. I've had mad hair and a good tan ever since! :w00t:

My parents took the light globes out of the lights over my bed when I was about that age, 'cause I wouldn't go to sleep [-X . Being the science type even then, I investigated the socket, got thrown across the room, and into hospital 8O

After that, I read with a torch under the covers, which also explains a lot about me! :boring:
