potassium iodide

Post by natfrog »

Hi folks
I opened a new container of Potassium Iodide this morning, and instead of the gleaming white crystals I was expecting, got a yellowy-orange sort of crystal.
Sort of yellowy brown sugar. (Didn't taste it!!!)
Has anyone experienced this?
Or has the supplier put the wrong stuff in?
Can this happen?
Love to hear your comments

Hi Nat,

Go back to your supplier. I heard of this happening with some product late last year. The problem is likely to be due to oxidation of the KI to iodine.

Good luck!

Hi All,

This will still work, hotter climate over the year has caused discolouoration. But the reagent will still perform as it should.

Cheers,

No worries, folks
Supplier advised they had a "bad batch", replaced with lovely white crystals.
The brown stuff will be udsed for fun experiments!
