Hi, looking for formula for 0.01 and 0.001m hcl.
Is it 10ml of 1mhcl to 990 h2o for 0.01mhcl? and
Is it 10ml of 0.1mhcl to 990h2o for 0.001m hcl?

Diane, are you working from 32% conc. HCL with a mol weight of 36.46? If it is then yes 10ml of conc to 990ml for .01m and 1ml conc to 999ml for .001m. Or are you breaking down made % solutions to a weaker molarity?

What is breakdown when using 1m for 0.01 and 0.001 using 0.1m?thanks Diane :cry2:

I think in this case Breakdown, means if you are going to Dilute DOWN to another M. Say you had 6M eg 500ml of 6M add 2.500ml of distilled water for 1M.

answer still unclear to me.
is 10 ml of 1m hcl to 990 h2o makes 0.01m hcl?
and
10ml of 0.1 m hcl to 990 h2o =0.001m hcl?
This is already using broken down solutions.!!

Hi Dianne
There's a simple formula that works when going from one concentration to another.
V1C1 = V2C2 where V1 is volume you want to find, C1 is concentration you have (eg 1M), V2 is the volume you are going to (eg 1000mL) and C2 is the concentration you want ( eg 0.01M). when you plug the values in you get V1 = 1000mL x 0.01M/ 1M = 10 mL.( of 1M HCl). Hope this helps.

It is a very good rule to always use Distilled water for Diluting anything. It is one of the purest waters we can use.
