Bridge building is fun!
Who can build the strongest bridge across the sink
Handle full of straws per group, sticky tape.
Use the slotted mass to determine who has made the strongest bridge.

We have various science competions also, the ones that we use and have great fun is Egg Drop as mentioned and Building a lighthouse

Working as a group you have 1 hour to design and make a lighthouse using the materials provided. When the time is up, the lighthouse will be tested and assessed for the following,
Design
Strength.

Planning should no longer than 10 minutes
During planning time allow the students to touch, handle and measure equipment.

They are not allowed to fold, join or fix anything together at this stage.

Materials
1 roll of sticky tape
assorted elastic bands
4 strips of alfoil
12 sheets of A4 paper
1 pce of wire approximately 1metre long
1 bulb
1 battery
2 drawing pins
1 clothes peg

Tools - 1 ruler, pencil and screwdriver

Building should take 45 minutes.

It must be able to:
be free standing
90 cm high
Having a working light at the top
have and on/off switch
Be made so that the battery is no more than 4cm from the base of the lighthouse.

Have fun.

In about 30 minutes I will be heading out onto the oval with a Class of Grade 7 students and a teacher. The kids are using old soft drink bottles to see who's rocket gets the longest flight. They are using Water, Citric Acid and Bicarb soda apparently this reacts slower than vinger and bicarb and therefore more distance (according to the teacher).
I will be demonstrating the principle of water rockets using 2 different sized soft drink bottles (just as they are, no modifications), water (obviously) and a bike pump, why am I demonstrating you may ask? because the teacher doesn't want to get. Pefect launch conditions at the moment, no wind and warm
I will let you know how it goes.

Well Wed. was a waste of time, the weather conditions were perfect, the rockets acted how they were meant to. It would have been quite good if some of the students could listen to the basic instructions about building a launch area in the long jump pit, don't waste the chemicals etc etc. but they couldn't. The majority did what they were meant to do.

One group decided to climb the hockey goals and launch their rocket from there. This same group decided to use more than the couple of teaspoons of bicarb and citric acid that was needed. and then they had the bright idea of throwing the rocket and the teacher and myself, mainly myself ended up with a combination of bicarb, water and citric acid all over. Lucky I was wearing my sunglasses as they got covered in this mix as well. To top it off I didn't get to demonstrate the water rockets to the students. Bugger
