Nitrile gloves dont protect you from........

found out yesterday.. Nitrile gloves allow the juice of Bronze Citrus bugs to go straight through.
my thumb and forefingers are stained deep bronze, & look like I have been chain smoking for 40 yrs!
It doesnt come off, so I assume that it will have to 'grow' out.
Thankfully though it doesnt smell either.
Must have transferred to my tissues.
Watch out for that one!

Which set me thinking, those of us that use nitrile as an alternative to latex.. we need to read the instructions on the boxes, to see what sunstances they are unsuitable for.

Anyone know of any, off the top of their head ?

yep, we really need to have a list. The odd thing was, that the gloves themselves werent stained. Only my fingers. But neither did the stinky smell go through to my fingers, although the gloves picked up the smell.
Go figure?! :?

Different chemical components of Bug juice perhaps? What were you doing with the bugs anyway? And what do they look like?

I just googled bronze cirtus bugs (because I didn't know what you were talking about) and on the page I went to it said the brown stain will last for about a week. Are these the same as stink beetles?

Ok
I have to confess that I have a bug problem.. at home, on my citrus trees.
I have tried all types of "safer' type bug sprays, but to no avail.
They decimate my trees every year..so that not one fruit remains...
so I vowed that this yr, I would prevail! After all, I am the superior predator in my backyard, and certainly the most intelligent. (Excepting when the cats around!)

After 4 different types of sprays, and them just using it as salad dressing, I decided that it was time for physical removal.
So on went the safety glasses( these things squirt something in defence...either acid or caustic), and on went the nitrile gloves.
In 10 minutes I removed 72 of the pests.
Popped them into a bottle with water & kerosene. Kills them.

So that has set me wondering what else can get through our gloves at work

FYI.. do you know that I also have a giant grasshopper control system?
My hubby with a bow & arrow. =D> :D

Hi,

I don't know much details, but my friend is using soapy water on lemon trees. It works for her :wink2:

The Chem. Dept. at the local Uni. said during a safety course that the best type of gloves in their opinion for handling the majority of chemicals was the cheap clear sandwich gloves. Plus they are not latex or powdered so if you have an allergy to either of those things that is also a good thing about those gloves.

Andrew, are we talking about the vinyl food handling gloves?

Did they explain why?

So you can get really really pinged off before you even start a task!

Ever tried putting those on. I hand them out for dissections, because nobody ever wants to keep them, or steal extras.

Clear Polyethalene gloves, is what I have. They said they performed a test by pouring acid etc into different types of gloves and seeing what happened to the gloves. eg leaks etc. Still it pays to look at the MSDS and most if not all glove manufactors have data about it on their websites.

Ocker, I actually tried... none. :-({|=
I am thinking that its a type of volatile oil, maybe similar to limonine, since they feed on citrus.

Yes, I understand the no-one wants to wear vinyl gloves. Dont fit, dont stretch.. but if they prevent substances from getting through it may be an option.
