Hi all,
I was wondering whether Bromine water should be stored in the flammable cupboard or with the acids? I know it can't be near sodium hydroxide but at present it is in the flammable cupboard. I was told by previous head teacher that it is very toxic so should be in the cupboard. The new HOD is unsure and I can't find any other info except in CSIS. HELP!!

We keep ours in the fridge in a sealed bag.

The CSIS suggest's it is stored within its class which is 8, each class should be stored away from any other class's (Think it is 3 metres at least) But perhaps some one else can check that.

As class 8 is Corrosive, a lot of that class is acids.

Bromine water is a class 8 (corrosive) dangerous good with a sub class 6.1 (toxic) so it is more suitable to store with your acids than in a flammable cupboard. I store mine at the bottom of my acid store in its own separate plastic container with a lid.

I thought that Bromine water was stored in the fridge. When I became lab tech for all year levels the previous lab tech stored the bromine water in the fridge and that is how I have left it. Can someone out there please clarify as my fridge is used for storing some chemicals including Hydrogen peroxide.

For many year these chemicals have lived in Labbies fridges, quite happy. Their was a case of some one "opened an old fridge with a light and it ignitated, the bottle in the fridge" They were so handy to keep things cool, but the vapours all mixed together and bang. Not too sure when this happened. Many years ago

Thanks Pommy. Considering the chemical cocktail that emanates from my fridge everytime I open it I'm not surprised at the possible consequences. Doesn't make me feel too safe either. Here was me thinking it was just my lungs and brain I was destroying!!!!

I store our bromine water also in the acid cupboards, however away from all other acids on its own shelf.

FYI

we have noticed by keeping it in our "Lab Fridge", it retains it's colour and strength for longer periods of time.

We keep our Bromine Water in a brown bottle, in a sealed snap lock bag, in our Lab Fridge.
Our chemistry teacher has said it "keeps" for alot longer when stored in the fridge.

CSIS page 59 Bromine Water, Store in refrigerator (Not Freezer) But it should not have any other chemical in the regrigerator, due to vapours.
