Cyclone in a bottle

Post by SGG »

Hi Everyone
One of the Junior school teachers wants to do a prac where she produces a "cyclone in a bottle".She saw it done a few years ago but is not sure how to reproduce it. Does anyone know a way?

I think you just get 2 soft drink bottles (1.25L) and fill one about 2/3 full with water. You can add food colouring if you like. Then you invert the second bottle over the one containing the water and seal them together. You can use some rubber hose if you have any the right size, or a large quantity of electrical tape. When you turn them upside down and swirl it around you can see the water looking like a cyclone. Someone else may have a better suggestion.

Show this to the teacher to see if it's familiar, there are a few variations.

One can actually buy a connecting lid that screws onto both bottles. From National Geographic, Professor Bunsen and other Scientific stores. Costs about $4-5 I think.

We have one set up with some kind of sparkly bits in the water. As the tornado swirls around the sparkly bits fly around like the trucks and cows on "Twister". :cheesy: :cheesy:
