Samples of different types of irron

Post by Sassi »

Hi,

Its too early in the term still for my brain to be functioning propely, so I need your help [-o<

I need to get the following samples of metals;

cast iron
wrought iron
pig iron
galvanised
mild steel
preferably in sheets so that it can be cut up inot same sized squares.

Any ideas where I can get this from?

Sassi,
I don't know what your teachers are thinking.
Cast iron is not cutable in to pieces and if you can get any in manageable sizes it will come from a foundry.
Wrought iron is used for building decorations so maybe a salvage place in Balmain or Petersham.
Pig iron goes into a blast furnace so AIS port Kemblamay have some, again size will be an issue.
For zinc sheeting the commercial name is Zincalume....maybe Bunnings but again it is used in roofing.
Mild steel sheet..again Bunnings.
Years ago BHP and its subsidiaries used to do sample kits, but i think no more.
Sassi I am a qualified Metallurgist and this request is not easy!!! perhaps they need to rethink!!

I got some rods of cast Iron mild steel and Stainless Steel and had industrial arts Dept. slice of coin size bits of each for corrosion experiments.
Also from Q stores I got sheets of mild steel, Galvanised iron, Tinplate, Brass, Copper, & Stainless steel the only problem is SS is a mongrel to cut.

Well thats exactly what I was thinking, but teacher insisted that you could get all those types of iron in a sheet (similar to copper sheets no worries! I dont know much about metals, so I thought I'd ask you guys! Thanks so much for the help and the tips I shall show this thread to the teacher and she can ring around to those places looking for it if she must
