Hi all,
Does anyone know where I could buy some sodium fluoride......ASAP? In the Newcastle area.
My teacher wants some for tomorrow.................I have phoned a few pharmacies with no luck.
Otherwise she'll have to wait...............

Sodium Fluoride: DG 6.1 Highly Toxic with severe chronic effects. Known sensitiser. Contact with acids liberates very Toxic gas. Not required in curriculum.
This has been on a banned list of chemicals for the NT and South Australia schools for quite a while now. I don't know what the situation is in NSW. You will not acquire this chemical from a pharmacy. Perhaps the teacher needs to source their own supply from a chemical company and provide a comprehensive risk assessment for its use before it is purchased. It would be a teacher only demonstration. Definitely not for student use. Quite frankly I wouldn't be handling that chemical myself.
There is still a prac in Pearson 10 text - "Halogen precipitates" - that lists potassium fluoride (another chemical on the banned list). Teachers are a bit miffed when they are told that they can't have certain chemicals. But a banned listed chemical is a banned chemical.

Hmmm ...just looked up CSIS , it's Yr11/12 .
Apparently it produces highly toxic fumes of Hydrofluoric acid when added to concentrated acids .
Note: Hydrofluoric acid is Banned chemical .
Just looked to see if we have it . We did but it had a green sticker on it
.....fixed that .
Maybe you can borrow some from another school .

RiskAssess has the solid as Yr11/12 but solutions as Yr 7-12.
I think it was part of a prac in the old chem curriculum??

Here's the one we did for that topic - worked well and no fluoride.
