Hi All,
Fifty years after the former Soviet Union launched Sputnik on Oct. 4, 1957, a spirit of cooperation has led to the International Space Station and a renewed effort to explore the moon. Shown here in its current state as of Summer 2007, the half-built station is the product of more than 16 nations, including the U.S., Russia, Canada, Japan, Brazil and the member states of the European Space Agency.

Looking Back on 50 Years of Spaceflight
Hi All,
The world took a giant leap forward on Oct. 4, 1957, when a silver sphere the size of a basketball launched into space atop a Soviet Union rocket.
Sputnik 1, a small beeping ball with four long antennas, became the first artificial satellite to orbit, ushering in the Space Age and launching a race to the moon between the former Soviet Union and the U.S.
On Oct. 4, 2007, the Space Age celebrates the 50th anniversary of the historic launch of Sputnik, the first artificial satellite, by the former Soviet Union.
The space shot also launched the Space Race to the moon between the U.S. and Soviet Union. But despite that turbulent beginning, the initial launch has led to five decades of triumphs and tragedies in space science and exploration.
