Re: When students should wear gloves

We have safety glasses have to be worn during all practicals, or they sit down. Ever seen what a broken scalpel can do, not pretty.

Re: When students should wear gloves

Ours wear gloves with all Chemicals no matter what strength. Blanket rule, then no room for teachers thinking it doesn't matter at certain strengths.

Re: Preparing Esters

I have one teacher who just loves to use Butyric acid, I was away the day it was done last year. They evacuated the Science block, I could still smell it the next day. You can't get the smell out of your nose. :redcard:

Re: storage of corrosives

Hi Brains trust!!

We have been told we have to have a corrosive cabinet, we have a flammable liquids cabinet inside our chemical room which is well ventilated 24/7. It's been suggested that a small 50L corrosive cabinet could be placed on top of flammables cabinet. Can anyone see a problem with ...

Re: how do you identify classroom glassware

I'm so lucky my prep. room is central to the labs, all glassware stays with me and goes out on the trolleys as requested for each prac., teachers get them to rinse free of chemicals before returning. If it's to be used for another class of it goes, after checking and topping up if need be. Through ...

Re: magnesium in burettes

I wouldn't be using HCl kids aren't allowed to use concentrated even if they are going to dilute it. 10M they are, why can't the use 1.0M 50mls it would still work and not be as dangerous. We also have the plastic burettes so I guess that would make it easier.

For those who refuse to make up bromine water from scratch. (after a bad accident) Georgia Deretic who co-wrote Foschem Senior Chemistry gave me a substitute that works just as well and less dangerous.

50 gms Potassium Bromide
Dissolve
