Hi, does anyone have an alternative to the elodea prac? A new teacher from interstate has ordered it for the first time since I've been here and we can't get any in NSW.
Thanks all!
Mel

Re: Risk Assess archiving
Not sure. I keep the print outs from each RA, and print out a weekly schedule each week and archive that. I would much prefer to save electronic files and save space and paper!

Re: Sodium chromate
CSIS is currently STILL being updated, it's a looooong process apparently since it still isn't finished. The online version is pretty much still the same old one. The new one has been promised for early next year last I heard. I won't be holding my breath... I've copied the entry for sodium chromate...

I was thinking that it looked like red lead too. I found some kicking around here just the other day.

We have a 3d printer in the library, I'm pretty sure that it is a Makerbot. So far it is working out OK.

Re: When does a risk assessment need to be done?
Surely there is something in your job description along the lines of "follow correct WHS procedures" or words to that effect? That way you can refuse to issue pracs without an up to date risk assesment as that would not be following the WHS procedures!

Re: what to do with broken burettes???
Thanks Matt, great ideas. I'll give them a go, better than adding to the broken glass bin.

what to do with broken burettes???
I have 3 burettes which were broken in transit. They all snapped above the tap, so as burettes go they are useless.
Does anyone have any ideas about what else I can use them for? I hate to throw away anything potentially useful...(which is why my house is full of stuff!!)
Thanks,
Mel

Woohoo!
The vinegar worked!!
My eyewash station now runs properly again. Let's hope we never actually have to use it though...

We have a set of 10 lab coats, they are used for our senior chem classes (if they remember to order them). Everyone else just does pracs in their school uniform...

Re: Eyewash station
Great ideas, I was hesitant to use CLR just in case I didn't get it all off. I'll give vinegar a go first and hopefully that will be all I need!
Thanks.
Thanks.

Re: Eyewash station
I was just checking one of ours and it is partially blocked. Some of the holes have calcified. This one is a hand held one on a hose, any suggestions on what would be safest to clean and unblock it with?

Re: Lighting Bunsens
We still use matches, but the match boxes are always 'vanishing'. I'm sure they travel through a magic portal to another dimension where all good match boxes go. I count out 3-5 matches per box so at least we still have the rest of the matches from the missing boxes... We are thinking of moving to f...

Re: Ordering for Practical Lessons
I print out a hard copy but it stays in the prep room on the side of the compactus - the sheets were forever getting lost or damaged. After the prac is finished with I file these in a folder. I also print up the weekly schedule and file these with the prac orders. I've printed up A5 signs and lamina...

Hi, we have typed up the table and printed it onto clear overhead projector transparency film. Works brilliantly! I'm using some here that are several years old and still going strong.

I missed it too. Will be very handy to keep track of which chemicals we NEED to keep, and which can slowly be disposed of.
