Re: NSW HSC Industrial Chemistry Option
Lorrae,
I have a hard copy of an experiment, which I can fax you. If you give me your fax number.
Pracs on emulsions are hard to find, this one is OK, not wonderful.

Lada

Re: Phenolphthalein Agar
Mel, do not add agar powder to boiling water. It will clump. Dissolve it in small amount of warm or cold water and slowly add boiling water from kettle, then boil. Cool it before adding NaOH and phenolphthalein.I use the same trays as Graham and let kids cut to size . I fill it to 3cm, so that is th...

Re: Phenolphthalein Agar
I make mine 3%, so 3g in 100mL or 15g in 500mL, just to be on the safe side. It sets nice and firm, easy to cut.
Also, I would start from scratch.

Our school is going to renovate the labs and I was asked for a wishlist. One item I really want is a dishwasher. What brands do you guys have.
I noticed Wayne got his only last year, what brand is it?

I just push the nicro wire into the glass rod as far as it goes and it seems to stay put. I have never heated the glass rod.It tends to go down as much as 1/4 of the length of glass tubing.

Re: Conc Sulphuric Acid
Do not transfer the small bottles into a large one. Much harder to handle. If they are passed resurrection, either neutralize the bottle and dispose or keep for collection later. Acid is still good to use for junior experiments and reflux for seniors.

Faraday's disc
Does anyone know, what it is and who would stock it?
We have a very old one, which has 2 metal discs joined by a leather band( a bit like dynamo), with magnet attached to one of the discs.
Teacher wants a newer model
Thanks,
Lada

Re: Acid Handling Gloves
I too, use nitrile gloves. They are suitable for most solvents.
For acid, I use rubber(latex) gloves. Most of my acid are less than 2M.

Hi Helen, I agree. My HOD knows nothing about changes, but I am slowly changing labels as I make up new chemicals or solutions for dropper bottles.

Re: Wine making equipment
Nicky, if in doubt, just substitute.I think it is the HCO3- that is the active ion. (Just my opinion)because I do not know what potassium bicarb is used for in wine making.
Good luck

Re: pH meter calibration
Definitely good enough. How much closer does he want pH4 to be to 4.01?
Even after re-calibrating, you would be lucky to get it any closer.
Anyway, all students need to know, if the soil is acidic, basic or neutral

Need some help. Enzyme practical coming up. We use amylase and I make up 0.1% solution. It has always worked but last year we bought new bottle and we did not get good results . I think someone mentioned that the new batch needs to be stronger. Am I correct?
