Re: colour change when heated

Zinc oxide changes colour at around 8000 degrees Celsius, so if you can get that organised I'd be most impressed.

Re: colour change when heated

Used silica gel will change colour on heating. Hydrated CuSO4 will turn from blue to white on heating due to water loss. I can't think of something that will change back on cooling apart from thermochromic dyes which I'm pretty sure schools don't usually have on hand. Good luck!

Re: CuSO4

From "The Laboratory". Dissolve 27.8g of iron(II) sulphate in distilled water containing 15mL of 0.1M H2SO4 and make up to 1L. This will give you a strength of 0.1M iron sulphate. Obviously just change the amount of iron sulphate for a different strength.

Re: Eyes for dissection

We got eyes from the abattoir delivered to our local butcher earlier this year. $5 freight. It sounds like we're lucky in that regard. Can't get fresh brains anymore though - we had to get preserved brains from Southern Biological.

Here's one that uses H2O2. Using stronger H2O2 results in a faster reaction. https://edu.rsc.org/experiments/iodine- ... 44.article

Re: Water purifier - deioniser etc

We bought a distiller from the brewery shop, and it's more than paid for itself. Plus no packaging or plastic bottles or effort. Occasionally I rinse it with 5M HCl to descale it. 4L per cycle and auto -off. pH is quite low of course, but that doesn't really matter for our purposes.

It depends on what they want to do with the terrarium - will there be animals in there? This from google: https://www.google.com/search?q=terrarium+plants&rlz=1C1GCEU_enAU886AU886&oq=terrerium&aqs=chrome.2.69i57j0i10i433i512l3j0i10i512l6.8942j0j7&sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8&safe...

Re: Gas syringe explosion

Totally. It was insane. Upside - no one got badly hurt and the kids love a good explosion. Downside - we were all shocked and went home thanking the gods of science for their mercy.

Yeah we had them in those clamps meant to stop the plunger coming out - the explosion bent the clamp! It was seriously full on.

Re: Gas syringe explosion

Yes all ok, luckily. One kid had a bit of glass in his leg but it was pretty minor compared to how it could have been. The teacher was horrified and did most of the clean-up himself!

Gas syringe explosion

Clamped gas syringe connected to a clamped side-arm test tube with stopper. Reaction of 2M HCl and magnesium ribbon, measuring the amount of gas released when varying the amount of Mg. Teacher decides to do a pop test with around 60mL of H2 in the syringe. Syringe plunger is propelled at great speed...

Re: Environmental friendly Disposable Gloves?

I've been saving up our gloves coz the head teacher said "Wait and see" re the recycling box. If there's money left over towards the end of the year, we'll get it. The gloves take up hardly any room, too. In the future I will only buy the biodegradable gloves from Haines. I emailed them a ...
