Re: Phenolphthalein Agar
Hi Lyn, my phenolpthalein agar didn't work this year either. Two failed batches. The third time I boiled it for a few minutes (I've always just added boiling water), and used bromothymol blue instead. It set great, plus the agar turns from blue to yellow (rather than clear) which makes the diffusion...

Re: chipped test tubes
Thanks Lyn! I had a chance to try it today, as I had to make some swan necks anyway. The Meker burner is definitely hotter and great for smoothing off the sharp ends of the tubing. Without a flame spreader however, I found it a bit hard to heat up a large enough portion of the tubing at once. So my ...

Re: chipped test tubes
Hi Lyn,
I use a regular bunsen & flame spreader, but it can take a while to heat the glass tubing up enough to manipulate it. I have a Meker burner in the cupboard and am curious to try it. Is it still best to use a flame spreader with it and if so, where would I buy one to fit?
Thanks,
Kyla

Re: Dynamic trolleys
Hi Helen, Currently wondering the same thing! We have some older metal ones. The wheels constantly fall off and bits break but they are easily repaired, providing you have/can make spare parts. We also have some of the newer plastic red & grey ones. They are much sturdier, but when the internal ...

Hi Merilyn,
Not to be a pain, but I'd also love a copy of this book if you wouldn't mind!

Blue Bottle Experiment
Hi,
Just wondering if anyone else has had any problems with Blue Bottles turning orange after a few hours?
Is there a way to prevent it, or is it just a matter of making up fresh every time?
Thanks,
Kyla

Length of Chemical Storage
Hi, I am in the process of doing an overhaul of the chemical management at the school I have just began working at. A lot of chemicals here backdate to the 2000s, some older than 15 years. Coming from an analytical background my initial thought was to dispose of anything older than a few years. But ...
