Re: cyanotype paper
Thanks bigmack, I think it's different as the cyanopaper one you just rinse with water (but same idea).

Re: Cleaning cuvettes
I don't recall having to clean cuvettes in the past, but my go-to (thanks to this forum) is napisan for glassware that won't come clean. Dissolve the napisan in warm water, then leave the glassware in it overnight (or weekend, as would be the case today). Hopefully a rinse in warm water and it will ...

Re: Help!! Meat tenderiser alternative
PS - I would love to have the time to do multiple experiments. If I had the time, I would compare a meat sample and a fruit sample. I still stand by my suspicion that the tenderiser has just carried over in some recipes from when they used to do cheek cells.

Re: Help!! Meat tenderiser alternative
I have written up a quick summary with photos in a word document. It's pretty rough and I would never submit it for an assessment!! :cheesy: It's too big to attach as a file and I don't have the ability to convert to PDF on this computer. If anyone wants the 'full' version I can try to PM or email i...

Re: Help!! Meat tenderiser alternative
Oh sorry Merilyn, I didn't read your comment properly! The second class is doing the prac today so I will have a play when all the equipment comes back. I should go and make the extraction buffer solution up now without the meat tenderiser so I can do the comparison!

cyanotype paper
Has anyone made their own cyanotype paper? The one that turns blue in the sun? Does it work as well as the ready-made cyanotype paper?

Re: Help!! Meat tenderiser alternative
I looked in Woolworths last week and couldn't buy any. We have an Extension Science student using it, thankfully I had stocked up last time someone needed it so the student should have enough. Something to think about for next time though. It sounds like it's not needed according to some other reci...

Re: Help!! Meat tenderiser alternative
We use chux cloths to filter through, cheap and always around. The buffer solution (salt, dishwashing liquid, water) lasts for years here - or until it runs out and I mix up another batch! This one works perfectly with both strawberries and kiwi fruit. Good to know the extraction buffer solution wi...

Re: Help!! Meat tenderiser alternative
Follow up question - Does anyone know how long the buffer solution will last? I've got classes doing this next week so it would be nice to not waste what's left. (I wouldn't expect it to last from year to year).

Re: Broth for Pasteur experiment
It's been a while since I last did this, but I don't remember adding anything to it (See the RosalieM comment further up - that's me ). I just threw the chicken wings in and boiled it for ages.

Re: Help!! Meat tenderiser alternative
curious to know what the meat tenderizer is Rosalie For DNA (strawberry) extraction we use a solution or 1 cup Dish-washing liquid 1/4 cup Salt 4 1/4 cups water . I know this also works on Kiwi fruit as a teacher used them once instead of strawberrys I used 50ml dishwashing liquid, 15g salt, 1 teas...

Re: Help!! Meat tenderiser alternative
Never mind - crisis averted! Thanks to the previous labbie being so organised it was listed in the science inventory spreadsheet and stored somewhere I hadn't thought to look. Phew! Deep sigh of relief!

Help!! Meat tenderiser alternative
Hi everyone, last minute request (not the teacher's fault) for the DNA extraction. We're using kiwi fruit. I could't get any meat tenderiser at coles this morning (the one close to school is a fairly small one) and I hoped the food tech kitchen would have some but no luck there either. Any suggestio...

Re: Buying Chemicals
Can you email westlab with your list to get a quote instead? Pain in the butt, I know... or request a printed catalogue? I bought some through Science Supply Australia earlier in the year and just emailed them to request a quote (the printed catalogue I had was from a year or two ago so I wasn't sur...

Re: Safety glasses hygiene
I stopped using the dishwasher for safety glasses last year due to a huge increase in breakages. They would come out of the dishwasher fine, but it appeared it was weakening the arms as they were snapping off as the students were putting them on. I went from 1 or 2 breakages a year to 2 or 3 a less...
