Re: Lighting Bunsens
As far as I'm aware there is no easy (read: safe) way to light a safety match without the box. Safety matches are designed so that they do not ignite on anything except the strike-strip on the box, which contains traces of red phosphorous to ignite the match. I will say that some of our classes (mos...

Re: aluminium potassium sulphate and copper sulphate crystals
I wonder if we could make a big crystal with it all, as I've seen huge CuSO4 crystals. I'm actually taking any CuSO4 and Alum crystals from the pracs and resaturating solutions to grow a set of crystals in the prep room. In just a few weeks I've grown a nice looking octahedral Alum crystal that's a...

Re: LEAD NITRATE
Sorry to resurrect an old thread, but I just started as the Lab Manager at my school, and the prep room cupboards are filled with lead nitrate dropper bottles for student use for precipitate and replacement reaction pracs, but they're all either 1M or 0.5M, both of which are big no nos according to ...

Re: Paper Chromatography Solvents
Ah, I see, this is for year 11 bio classes. Good catch on the hexane in RiskAssess, I should have been more specific in that I'm using Cyclohexane, which is in the Yr 11-12 users. I'm not sure if they'll do chromatography in junior science (I just started the job a few weeks ago). If so I'll certain...

Re: Paper Chromatography Solvents
Thanks for the responses. Methylated spirits would certainly be a more cost effective solvent. Do you get good banding of the pigments with it? We typically use acetone for the extraction followed by the hexane:acetone solvent for the mobile phase, but I might try the spirits for the solvent and see...

Paper Chromatography Solvents
Hello fellow labbies! I recently became the lab manager at Townsville Grammar and happened upon this forum as I was looking for helpful resources. I already found answers to many of my questions just by browsing the forum (thank you all for that!) but I have a couple of specific questions that I wan...
