Re: Urgent help Required- Australian Standards for lab floor
I don't have copy, just found the info online when I saw your post. Best I could see is that you need to buy them (and they aren't cheap).

Sounds like a couple that I attended! But that doesn't mean you need to be against all such events!CoolestGuyinSchool wrote: I was surrounded by a bunch who only wanted to complain about how hard the job was ad how badly the teacher's treated them...that was 10 years ago and haven't considered a return.

Re: Iron(II) nitrate
What does she want the iron (ii) nitrate for? If you only want a substance that provides Fe2+ ions, then I suggest you use ferrous ammonium sulphate, all other Fe2+ salts oxidise too quickly to Fe3+. Chlorine water: produce Cl2 gas by reacting KMnO4 with Conc. Hydrochloric acid, using a delivery tub...

The American list was interesting reading - it contained a list of banned substances, most of which we happily use here in SA.

Ocker, are you able to share your exact procedure for this practical? It sounds interesting.

Re: Naphthalene black
We did the same exact prac about 10-11 years ago, and I couldn't find any napthalene black in my stores, so I substituted it for Eriochrome Black T (aka Solochrome black).
Worked perfectly - in fact I still have my test fingerprint!

Re: reaction equation: schultz's & I/KI soln starch cellulos
Yeap. That's basically all it is to it. Starch forms a tightly coiled spring in solution (almost torus-, or donut-, shaped). The linear triiodide ion ( I 3 - ) slips neatly into this coil to form an ionic complex; in which position its vibrations are constrained. Thus causing its change in absorban...

Re: reaction equation: schultz's & I/KI soln starch cellulos
Do you make your own Schulz solution or do you purchase it? I have been asked for this over the years, and the formulation I found on the 'net never seems to give positive results. With respect to the starch / Iodine reaction: the best anyone (including Dr Karl Kruszelnicki) has ever been able tyo t...

Re: SDS + Chemwatch
In SA our government is still arguing WHS legislation (incorporating GHS). I wouldn't panic about (M)SDS - I've been here 12 years and the only time the MSDS folder gets opened is when I replace the outdated ones. If you're bored, the following site contains interesting reading..... http://www.safew...

Hi Sue Just wondering what data loggers you were going to buy - we also have the TI ones and they are NOT user friendly at all - we are looking for something simpler to use and obvioulsy not going to cost too much. Terry We used to have TI, but didn't have many probes etc. Now we have Vernier units...

When I need Fe2+ at any time, I normally use ferrous ammonium sulphate - it doesn't oxidise to the ferric species in solution.

Re: Help Please- pH solutions for enzyme pracs
I adjust the pH of the peroxide: The Teacher/Lab Guide to our Year 12 Practical Book suggests (for 100mL of solution, scale up as needed): pH1: 60mL of 6% peroxide + 40mL 2M HCl pH3: To 60mL H2O2 add 38mL of distilled water. Test the pH. It will be approximately 5. Add HCL dropwise until pH is 3 and...
