Re: Do you go to faculity meetings?

In 20 yrs of being a Lab Tech I have the policy of not attending either staff meetings or faculty meetings. If we have new equipment I organise a time and demonstrate to the staff in a lab. I attend the general staff meeting at the start of Term 1 and that is it. My experience has been that it is pr...

Re: risk assesments in NSW

Lisa, When I worked in NSW we followed the the dot system from CSIS.If a teacher orders a concentration not suitable for the year group point this out to him and if he insists on using it it is on is head. The teacher is responsible in the classroom and should check before the class use the equipment...

Re: standardized NaOH

Sassi, The other method is to make up a standard solution of 0.1M sodium carbonate which has been dried in a drying oven and titrate this against a 0.1M solution of HCl. I can fax you the calculations for this as it is not 1ml for 1ml. If you purchase your HCl from Labtek or equivalent supplier they...

Hi Helen'
I have only used the dry ice cloud chamber and have found it very unreliable.
See if you can trial the alternate one before you buy.

Re: Samples of different types of irron

Sassi, I don't know what your teachers are thinking. Cast iron is not cutable in to pieces and if you can get any in manageable sizes it will come from a foundry. Wrought iron is used for building decorations so maybe a salvage place in Balmain or Petersham. Pig iron goes into a blast furnace so AIS...

Re: Synthetic Blood

Having tried all the fake blood recipes,I have purchased through the St John Ambulance Laerdal concentrated(fake) blood. It comes in a tube and is the consistency of toothpaste. I have tested it by a 2:1 dilution in water and it splatters nicely. We paid $31 for a 100g tube. You can purchase it from L...

Re: chemicals down the drain??

The CIS handbook has it all in NSW.
If you do not want to re-use the copper sulfate solution, precipitate the copper by putting a wad of steel wool in the solution then the steel wool plus copper goes in the bin and the clear solution down the drain...easy.

Neither of our Prep rooms have exhaust fans however we have wall fans and windows. I only purchase 500ml bottles and keep minimum qua...

Re: HELP - Chemical problems

If your friend is at a school in NSW they have to conform with the CIS handbook. It is all there as to what stays and goes and all the nasties need to be disposed of by professionals. The HT and Principal need to do some reading and in all cases the buck stops with the Principal. If that chemical is n...

Yes I would try the Museum.
In Queensland we can borrow specimens from the Museum.I order online and then pickup from their local outlet...it is a wonderful service and not expensive.
When I worked in Sydney I never knew of a similar service there.
