Seriously dude - time for some photos! If for no other reason, then to entertain those of us with cabin fever stuck at home, with no life at the moment! :-(

Re: Hay infusion

Perhaps as you pour the solution back out onto the grass or pond from whence it came, you could utter the words: "From grass you came, and to grass you shall return". Makes it sound more formal then. :cheesy: But seriously, when we do hay infusions, we only awaken what is naturally there a...

Re: Freight for transportation of chemicals

Everything costs that much to freight down here :( And also freighting UP here! Not to mention, we get our highways washed away at least once a year. But yes, addressing the original comment, we always have to factor in the freight costs, since they're always exhorbitant! Sometimes I even make the ...

Dunna but you can buy Faraday's torches from Jaycar or perhaps Dick Smith. Same principal, different housing.

Acid Handling Gloves

My replacement at school is trying to source proper acid-handling gloves with limited success. She is also looking for a glove that might be resistant to solvents, eg acetone.

Any clues on where to buy these? What do you guys use?

Re: Brain Drain

Well given that NaOH is only 40g per Litre, do you really need the grief of working out how much to add. Seriously, I wouldn't bother! Unless of course it's some sort of weird Senior Science prac? In which case, tell them to find another one! :cheesy:

Aww gosh guys! Thanks.   This is the week that I'm neutropenic, (low blood count - no white cells, no platelets) so not running around anywhere. My daughter took me to the beach Sunday afternoon, to sit in the sun and watch my terrier jump microscopic tropical waves like a hero. :D N...

Guys, place it on foam rubber or a thick blanket. Otherwise your whole benchtop becomes a sounding board.

Yes Nicky, from memory, it's just to change the pH, and since they aren't drinking it, go with Sodium Bi-Carb.

Re: pH meter calibration

Same here Jazz. I'm not taking my precious pH meters and junking up the glass membranes with dirt!

In the same vein, I use a brick wall moisture meter (also from Bunnings) to test the soil, and that gives a workable reading too.

Re: Riskassess

I'm sure I've thrown in my 2 cents worth somewhere else, but to add to what Graham said, a basic rule of thumb (after having read all the guidelines) is: Using bunsens, or blades always equates to a medium risk, to be mitigated by "teacher gives clear instructions, blah blah". Similarly, i...

Re: Dialysis tubing

I wet it, tie a knot in the bottom (really really tightly tied) and then separate it at the the top. THEN i blow into it, to make it look like a little sausage, and stand it upside down over the pegs on a test tube rack and let it dry. Then what you have is dry, slightly crackly open tubes that the ...

Re: Diffusion and osmosis prac yr 11

Hey Guys. I use a 3mL disposable dropper and cut the end off the top of the bulb part. Then I insert it into the dialysis tubing and tie it off above the bulb part, so that the graduated 3 mL part extends above the tubing. That way the liquid has a much smaller diameter tube to go up, so the change ...
