Re: Lighting Bunsens

We're still using matches, and it's not just the kids who have trouble. The matchbox strikers on the matches we get are terrible.

Re: Ordering for Practical Lessons

I print out the whole risk assessment and the teachers (sometimes) read out the risks to the class. I'm not sure how many of them actually read it before they sign it, but I make sure it's in front of them when they start the prac.

Re: Potassium dichromate solution disposal

I used Appendix E in the CSIS. Potassium dichromate is labelled as 42 in Appendix D, so I would use those instructions. But Appendix D does say it may be disposed of down the sink.
I'm DET, and still using the old CSIS.

Re: Potassium dichromate solution disposal

According to CSIS: Add sodium sulphide, sodium hydroxide or sodium carbonate. Stir and pour the mixture into the heavy metals waste bottle. When settled, the clear solution may be decanted and washed down the sink. Hold the precipitate for collection by licensed waste contractors.

The last time I had to buy them I ended up getting the 12V 36W from Serrata, and they work fine.

Water Hardness

I have been asked for Eriochrome Black T indicator and EDTA for water testing. And nitrate/nitrate ions tests. This is for a student doing chemistry by Distance Ed. She doesn't have any more information. Can anyone help? This is for tomorrow.
Thanks

Re: Yoghurt slides

I've never done this, but I just googled it and multiples sites came up. The first one said: 1.Take a very small drop of yogurt with the toothpick and smear it for 2 to 3 seconds on the slide. 2.Place a small drop of methylene blue solution on a microscope slide (optional). ... 3.Place a coverslip o...

We bought one of these last year. First use, it got ripped in two places. I've taped the rips up with black electrical tape, but no-one seems keen to get it out again.

There isn't really a response for me. Several years ago I was moved to the office for a term. "Multi-skilling". I hated it. Have been in science ever since. So do I tick the first box?

We've got 2 of the 10mL pipettes, but I don't think they've ever been used. We bought them to try, years ago - from Scientrific - but they seem to have been put aside and forgotten.

Re: What paper towel do you get ?

We use the Tork paper as well. We have to buy it out of our budget, and even have to supply the staffroom, although every other staffroom is suppled by the cleaners. We've let the paper run out in the staffroom, but the cleaner never replaces it, so I have to. We have only recently been allowed to g...

Hi Kathryn We usually get ours from Illawarra Smallgoods in Fairy Meadow, but this year we're getting preserved eyes from Southern biology, because we're doing it across the whole year and need 65 eyes. The teachers will be doing the dissections over a week or two and decided it would be better to g...

My HT has just told me that she was told at a CNI meeting that Westlab sell the GHS chemical labels.
I can't find them anywhere on the Westlab site, so she's asking for the link.

The gauze is shaped to fit the tripod. Teachers are very happy with them.

Re: Testing Leaves For Starch

I can answer my own question. The DEC did issue Safety Alert No 50 which states that "Schools must ensure that methylated spirits is not heated directly over a Bunsen burner even in a closed container such as a flask with reflux condenser. The recommended method is the use of a water bath where...
