Hi Suzyr, The first time I made this jelly (and it was in my first month on the job) it did not set at all. I thought perhaps the agar was old so I opened a new one and tried again. I add 40g agar to 1L of nearly boiling 0.1M NaOH(with enough phenolphthalein to make it deep pink) and stir until it d...

Well, I have to say I'm a bit concerned. My teachers seem to be doing their own RA's and doing God knows what with them. We're having a faculty meeting this afternoon and I'll bring this topic up, but we were under the impression that the information in Appendix D constituted the RA for chemicals us...

SASS conference

Hi m
I have already pm'd you about this.
Last year a bus was organised by someone (it may have been Warrawong), and I was hoping it was being organised for this year as well.
I haven't heard anything yet, and if it doesn't eventuate we could travel together anyway.

Bunsen Burners

Thanks everyone.
I think I'll just buy some new bunsens, then I'm sure to be safe.

Bunsen Burners

Hi Robb
What do you mean by "cause the gas to stream line through the Bunsen Burner"?
Two of our labs have very low gas pressure, so I thought that these LPG burners may work better, but I don't want to do anything that may be dangerous.
Thanks

Bunsen Burners

Is it alright to use LPG bunsens on Natural Gas? I've got 10 brand new LPG bunsens (ordered by mistake by HT a couple of years ago, before my time) and I would like to use them. I have tried one and it gives a good flame, although a bit big. I also have some bunsens for coal gas, and they give a ver...

Hi Tristan
It sounds like the cloudiness you are seeing is the chloride (or other halogen) precipitating out of the water (eg AgCl[sub]2[/sub]).
Maybe your water deioniser needs a new filter.
Hope this helps.

Van de Graaf Generators

We've just bought 4 from Serrata (1052222) @ $330.00. They have a hand crank as well as being powered and come with some nifty accessories. My teachers think they're great - they give a good large spark and you can feel the static electricity building up in the room.
Hope this helps.

Rats

Hi m,
Have you tried Southern Biology? They supply frozen rats for about $12.00 each.
I have been here 5 years and in that time we have never dissected rats, and I'm not about to suggest it!
We do, however, dissect brains, eyes, hearts and kidneys.

Rejoining Spirit Thermometers

Hi Robyn I have an incubator oven that I can set on 120[sup]0[/sup]C. I stand the thermometers in beakers in the oven and leave them until the spirit fills the well at the top, keeping an eye on them all the while so they don't overheat. Then I remove them and let them cool while still vertical. I h...

Dishwashers

We're thinking of buying a dishwasher. Since we have 6 labs with 4 prep rooms over 3 floors, we would really like a portable one to start with. Do most schools have a dishwasher? Can anyone recommend one?
Thanks

Radioactive Sources

Thanks again, juliem!
The last teacher to use these sources had left the 'plug and pin' sources pulled apart, so I wasn't sure if that was how they were used.

Radioactive Sources

Are the 'plug and pin' sources of americium, caesium etc considered sealed sources?
Are they supposed to be opened for use?
I also have a small jar of an unidentified grey powder in the box of sources.
How can I identify and/or dispose of it?

CSIS Inventory

Does anyone use APPENDC1 and APPENDC2 from the old CSIS CD? I have the files on the hard drive and can enter APPENDC2 to create the storage areas etc, but when I go into APPENDC1 to produce a consolidated list of of hazardous substances and dangerous goods, the program falls over. I get a macro erro...
